NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Athletics Director Shawn Chin-Farrell has announced the hiring of Andy Newman as Men's Basketball Head Coach. Having served as the head coach for the most successful run in Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) Men's Basketball history, culminating in a NCAA Division II West Region Championship and a National Semi-Final finish, Newman becomes the eighth head coach in the history of the CSUN program.
"Andy Newman's career is defined by creating a culture that develops young men into champions on and off the court," Chin-Farrell said. "He has won championships on the court everywhere he has been, while ensuring his student-athletes graduate with a degree prepared to be champions in life."
Newman's teams have won championships at every stop along his coaching journey. He comes to CSUN with an overall head coaching record of 206-98.
Newman joins the Matadors having built the top program in the NCAA Division II West Region at CSUSB over the past three years. In his four seasons at CSUSB Newman had four consecutive winning campaigns, highlighted by three NCAA Tournament berths, after inheriting a program that had four-straight losing seasons prior to his arrival. Newman registered an impressive 91-30 overall record and 63-21 conference record with the Yotes.
In addition to the NCAA Tournament berths, Newman coached CSUSB to back-to-back CCAA regular season titles and a 55-8 record over the last two seasons. Known for his high-octane offenses, Newman's Yotes won a program record 31 games in 2022-23 while amassing a school record for points in a season, 3,094. The 2023 NCAA Final Four run was the school's first in 16 seasons.
Newman was recognized as the CCAA Coach of the Year in each of the past two seasons while he also receiving NABC West Region Coach of the Year accolades in 2022. His players earned 16 all-conference accolades during his stint at CSUSB, including a first team All American the past two years.

Their belief in me is greatly appreciated, and I intend to make them, as well as the entire community, proud of the efforts of the men's basketball program on the court and in the classroom," declared Newman.
"I plan to bring an exciting, fast paced, team-oriented style of basketball back to the Valley. We will entertain the Matador faithful by lighting up the scoreboard and competing for championships. My wife Kellie, along with my two sons Luke and Kade, are honored to be joining the CSUN family. I can't wait to get to work."
Before his time at CSUSB, while serving as the Head Coach of the University of Texas Permian Basin (UTPB) from 2013-18, he led the Falcons to the greatest run in its men's basketball history. In 2017, UTPB won its first ever Lone Star regular season and tournament championships. In recognition of the historic achievement, Newman was named the Lone Star Conference Coach of Year. Over his five seasons at the helm, Newman guided the team to five consecutive winning seasons and a 101-50 overall record. Newman's Falcons earned back-to-back trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament over his last two seasons, capped by a Sweet 16 trip in 2018.
Newman is well known within The Big West, having been the lead assistant at Cal State Fullerton for 10 seasons from 2003-13. Newman served as the Associate Head Coach in 2007-08 during Fullerton's first and only Big West regular season championship since 1976. The team would go on to win the Big West Tournament and qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1978. Serving as the interim Head Coach in 2012-13, the Titans were the top scoring offense in the Big West.
Prior to his time at Fullerton, Newman served as the Director of Basketball Operations for one season at Fresno State where he helped the Bulldogs win the Western Athletic Conference championship.
A graduate of Azusa Pacific University, Newman led the team to a 34-5 record and a trip to the NAIA Final Four in 1998. Newman also spent one season at Southern Utah University, leading the team in assists and minutes played. While a member of West Valley College, Newman was a part of a program that went 65-6, won two conference titles and earned two state championship game berths.
Newman is married to Kellie Newman (Cox), the 2005 Big West Women's Soccer Offensive Player of the Year while at Cal State Fullerton. Andy and Kellie have two sons, Luke and Kade.
Newman will be formally introduced to the CSUN and Valley communities at his soon to be scheduled introductory press conference. That press conference will take place on the floor of the Premier America Credit Union Arena and will be open to the public. Stay tuned for more information.
