Injuries Force Gophers to End Season Early

4/12/2023 8:57:00 AM | Tennis

Minnesota, which is down to three healthy student-athletes, will not compete in its final five regular-season matches nor the Big Ten Tournament

University of Minnesota Director of Athletics Mark Coyle announced today that the tennis team will not compete for the remainder of the season due to a rash of injuries that has reduced the available number of healthy players to three.

"Our first concern is always the health and safety of our student-athletes," said Coyle. "This is an unfortunate and extremely unique situation where we no longer have enough healthy student-athletes to compete for the remainder of the season. We have communicated our situation to the Big Ten, and I commend our student-athletes who have proudly competed for the Maroon and Gold this year. This is an extremely difficult way for their season to end. Our goal is to help our student-athletes recover and to field a healthy and competitive roster for the 2023-24 academic year."

Minnesota routinely competed with only four student-athletes for most of the season and compiled an admirable 5-12 record under difficult circumstances.

The Gophers have five regular-season matches left on their schedule in addition to the Big Ten Tournament. The team will not compete in any of these matches and they will officially be recorded a forfeit.
