Stacy Cheney Named Head Volleyball Coach at UMass Boston

Cheney who has Division I experience will take the reigns of the volleyball program in April

BOSTON, Mass. – Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Recreation Dr. Jacqueline Schuman has announced the appointment of Stacy Cheney as the new head women's volleyball coach at the University of Massachusetts Boston.

Cheney comes to the harbor campus after serving as the associate head coach at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) for 13 years.

"This is a great day for our volleyball program. I want to welcome Coach Cheney to the UMass Boston family. As the search process developed, Stacy set herself apart from the candidate pool with her extensive knowledge of the game and her innate ability to lead and mentor young women. I am excited for her to be the next leader of our program," said Schuman.

While at UNH, Cheney helped lead the Wildcats to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances in 2013, 2014, 2015, to 2016. During that time, the Wildcats also won four America East Regular Season Championships and four America East Conference Tournament Championships.

"I would like to thank Dr. Jacqueline Schuman, Stephanie Dollar, Jackie Perez, and the entire search committee for this wonderful opportunity to become a part of the Beacon family. I look forward to working with the student-athletes, hitting the recruiting trail for future Beacon volleyball players, and connecting with Beacon alumnae to learn more about their experiences and the program's rich past."

In addition to her coaching duties at UNH, Cheney also served as the recruiting coordinator for the program. Under her watch, the Wildcats recruited and developed four America East Player of Year award recipients, four America East Setter of the Year award recipients, and two America East Defensive Player of the Year Award recipients.

Cheney was recognized along with the rest of the UNH coaching staff by their peers in the America East as Coaching Staff of the Year in 2013 and 2014.

"I am very impressed with the academics, facilities, and the team's past successes at UMass Boston. I am excited to build traditions and excellence within UMass Boston Volleyball!"

Cheney, who will begin her role on April 10th, earned her B.A. from UNH and a master's degree from the University of Delaware.
