Mike Zaagman named head coach of Ultimate Frisbee programs

There is a men and women's program in Ultimate Frisbee

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Mike Zaagman has been named the first head coach of the Ultimate Frisbee men and women's programs at Davenport University. The team will begin competition in the fall of 2023 and will be fully-funded by the athletic department and scholarships are available.

Zaagman started playing the sport in 2007 and has been involved ever since. He played for four years at Calvin University along with two years in the American Ultimate Disc League (Pro Ultimate) and 14 years at the club level.

"Ultimate Frisbee is one of the fastest growing collegiate sports," said Paul Lowden, executive director of intercollegiate athletics. "We are excited to offer tremendous opportunities for student-athletes in the sport of Ultimate. Mike Zaagman is well recognized locally, regionally and nationally in the sport of Ultimate, we are fortunate to have him lead our men and women's teams."

In 2012, he started Zig Zag Ultimate in Grand Rapids and in 2017 it really started to take off and in the last five years it has grown to over 500 4th - 12th graders playing yearly. While there are more wins than just on the field, one of his favorite moments is winning the 2022 Michigan High School State Championship. He has started over 100 Ultimate teams including three University teams. Zaagman has a passion for the sport and wants to see it grow at the collegiate level.

"I am excited to be joining the Davenport University family," said Zaagman. "I believe the resources, exposure and dedication of an established winner will be the envy of every Ultimate Frisbee program. I want to play Ultimate the right way with spirit and enthusiasm."

Zaagman earned his bachelor's degree from Calvin University in Business and Media Production.
