Respected Southeastern Conference regulatory administrator JB Bowling returned to the Tennessee Athletics executive leadership team as Senior Associate Athletics Director of Compliance in August of 2021 and was promoted to executive associate athletics director for compliance and legal affairs in November 2024.
In addition to managing regulatory affairs and overseeing Tennessee's compliance staff, Bowling also serves as the sport administrator for UT's men's and women's tennis programs.
From the summer of 2016 through the summer of 2018, Bowling served as Tennessee’s Associate AD for Football Compliance and Administration. He was born in Sewanee, raised in Tullahoma and has been licensed to practice law in Tennessee.
Between his stints on Rocky Top, Bowling was the senior Associate AD for Athletics Compliance at Texas A&M, where he maintained oversight of compliance and regulatory affairs for all 20 of the Aggies’ varsity athletics programs until August of 2021.
Bowling has spent his entire collegiate and professional career in the Southeastern Conference. He received a degree in Political Science from Auburn in 2001 before completing both a master’s degree and juris doctorate degree from Alabama in 2006 and 2004, respectively.
From 2004-16, Bowling worked in the Alabama athletic department, rising to the executive-staff level as Associate AD for Compliance in 2011. He was the liaison to the Chancellor, President, Board of Trustees and associated offices throughout campus and the University of Alabama System. During his five years overseeing Alabama’s compliance operation, the school won eight national championships across four sports.
He also taught Legal Issues in Sport as an adjunct professor at Alabama, served as a member of the NCAA DI Amateurism Fact-Finding Committee and was a member of the state of Alabama’s Athlete Agents Commission.
After transitioning to UT in 2016, Bowling oversaw compliance for the Volunteers’ football program in addition to overseeing the sports nutrition staff and the athletic department’s dining facility. He also assisted in the development of a sports science committee.
Bowling and wife, Jackie, have four children.
