MOBILE, Ala. | South Alabama Director of Athletics Dr. Joel Erdmann announced Friday that women's golf head coach Matt Luther will resign at the end of the season in order to pursue personal opportunities outside collegiate athletics.

Luther, who has been at the helm of the program since June 2015, led the Jaguars to the 2019 Sun Belt Conference Championship, the program's first title since 1997, which was followed by an NCAA Regional appearance at the NCAA Auburn (Ala.) Regional – the first NCAA postseason berth in the program's history. He was named the Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year that same year.

"It has been a pleasure working with Matt for the last eight years," Erdmann said. "He has definitely placed his thumbprint on the program and is leaving it on solid ground as we transition to new leadership.  We deeply appreciate his service to the department and the University and wish him the very best in his future endeavors."  

"This was an incredibly difficult decision for me," Luther said. "I can't find the words to express the gratitude I feel for the student-athletes, support staff, administration and entire South Alabama family.  It' been a privilege to compete alongside every one of you and I couldn't be prouder of everything we have accomplished over the last eight years.  The future for South Alabama women's golf is extremely bright and I will forever be a Jaguar Fan.  

A national search for his replacement will be conducted.
