Ferris State football program reprimanded

Penalties include financial restitution, one-game suspension for head coach from DII championship competition

The Division II Championships Appeals Subcommittee has upheld penalties for the Ferris State football program for damage that occurred at the host stadium after the 2022 championship game. The penalties include financial restitution, a fine and a one-game suspension from Division II championship competition for head coach Tony Annese.

The Division II Football Committee originally issued the following penalties:

  • Restitution to the McKinney (Texas) Independent School District for $15,383 in cleaning and repair expenses.
  • A $2,500 fine.
  • A one-game suspension for Annese from coaching the next NCAA championship playoff game in which he would otherwise be a coach.
  • A public reprimand.

The subcommittee noted the head coach is responsible for the actions of the individuals within the program and this circumstance was not an isolated instance given the program has committed multiple cases of misconduct recently.

"The subcommittee fully supports the actions taken by the Division II Football Committee in this case," said Reid Amos, subcommittee chair and commissioner of the Mountain East Conference. "The inappropriate conduct associated with this action will not be tolerated at any NCAA Division II championship."
