BRISTOL, Tenn. – After five years as the head coach of the King University women's soccer team, Paul Shaw has formally announced his resignation from the head coaching role to pursue other opportunities.
"I am appreciative for the past 4 years I have spent here at King University," Shaw said. "To our coaching team, Coach Frei for the past two years, Coach King and Coach Wilson, as well as colleagues; facilities, admissions, student services personnel and faculty, thank you for your support of me and the women's program.
"To the players of our #OneStorm soccer team, it has been a privilege to coach you and I wish you all the best in your journeys on and off the field."
Shaw was hired to take over the program in April 2020, and guided the Tornado through five seasons, including the COVID-19 induced Spring of 2021 season, where he earned his first career win March 14, 2021 over Converse. In his time at King, he has had a Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, as well as 26 Academic All-Conference Carolinas selections.
"Paul has been a great Christian leader and mentor for our student athletes the past 5 years," Vice President for Athletics David Hicks said. "Our program has made strides and is stronger because of his efforts, and I am thankful for all he has contributed to King. I wish he, Michelle, and the rest of his family nothing but the best with these new opportunities."
In 2023, Shaw guided the Tornado to six wins, including a 6-3 home win over rival Lees-McRae and a 3-2 road win at Converse. The Tornado finished the season winning two out of their final three games, including a 7-1 win at Erskine to close the season.
King will immediately begin a national search for the next women's soccer head coach.
