North Carolina AD Bubba Cunningham has agreed to a two-year extension through July 2029. He will remain in his current role until the summer of 2026 before transitioning to Senior Advisor to the Chancellor and Athletic Director. He will be succeeded as AD by Roush Fenway Keselowski (RFK) Racing President Steve Newmark, who will come aboard as Executive Assoc. AD. UNC notes that Newmark has experience in “sponsorships, marketing, team operations and contract negotiations” and will “initially focus his attention on strategies tied to revenue-driving initiatives, particularly related to UNC's Football and Men's and Women's Basketball programs” before transitioning to AD in 2026. Northern Arizona has promoted Deputy AD Uri Farkas to VP for Intercollegiate Athletics. "This is a startup. It's not like I'm walking into nothing, but in many ways this is a true startup." That’s how College Sports Commission CEO Bryan Seeley describes the CSC to ESPN’s Dan Murphy and Pete Thamel, who note the “former federal prosecutor with degrees from Princeton and Harvard estimated it would take two to three years to work through the kinks of this new system before anyone could fairly judge if the CSC was successfully fulfilling its mission. Despite the pressure to put down rails to steer a train that is already moving at full steam, Seeley is approaching the job with patience.” To gain the trust of all stakeholders, Seeley plans to start in his role listening to their concerns, and New York Yankees Asst. GM Jean Afterman, who credits Seeley with restoring "integrity" to MLB's investigation team, remarks: “If anybody thinks he's going to come in guns blazing, that's just not his style. He’s going to listen to everybody.” As far as adjudication is concerned, Seeley explains the CSC won’t try to reinterpret or stretch beyond the specific rules agreed to in the House settlement, adding: "We're going to look at the spirit of things in terms of interpreting what the rules are, but ultimately the settlement language is the starting place for all those interpretations. The NCAA spent $62.2M on outside legal counsel during FY24, “bringing its total legal expenditures to over half a billion dollars (unadjusted for inflation) since Ed O’Bannon filed his landmark antitrust case in July 2009,” according to Sportico’s Daniel Libit, who adds the NCAA “reported $1.29B in total revenue, reflecting a 3% increase from the prior fiscal cycle. But after accounting for liabilities, the organization ended the year with a net asset deficit of $1.97B and total liabilities exceeding $3B.” Additionally, the NCAA distributed $688,257,173 in grants and assistance to 1,185 colleges, universities and athletic conferences. TV rights remained the primary revenue driver, generating $948.4M, while championships and the NIT contributed another $263.2M. Libit also reports that at the close of FY24, the NCAA employed 619 full-time staff members, up from 591 the previous year but still below pre-pandemic levels. The NCAA’s highest-paid independent contractors were all law firms, with the top five in FY24 as follows: Wilkinson Stekloff: $11,036,245; Barnes & Thornburg: $5,294,211; Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe: $4,759,416; Bryan Cave: $3,652,193; and Latham & Watkins: $3,553,943. Opendorse has released its fourth annual report on the state of NIL, which finds that total spend on NIL products and services has increased from $918M in 2021-22 to $2.26B in 2024-25. Of particular note, the 2024-25 figure nearly doubles the previous year’s total of $1.17B. Opendorse projects that figure will increase at a slower rate moving forward, climbing to $3.15B in 2028-29. Broken down into market segments, the report indicates that student-athletes receive 29% of commercial NIL dollars – just 10% from products (e.g., jerseys, video games), but 80% from services (e.g., posts). Meanwhile, athletes receive 90% of collective NIL dollars, with the remaining 10% going to overhead and commissions, and 95% of collegiate NIL dollars, with less than 5% going to support staff or agent commissions. For many student-athletes, especially those in women’s basketball and Olympic sports, the highest earning potential is still in college. Opendorse assessed more than 1,000 student-athletes who earned at least $100K and found that 69% remain college athletes, 19% compete professionally in the U.S. or abroad, 10% entered the workforce out of college and 2% played professionally but have since retired. For the upcoming season, Power 4 schools are expected to spend an average of $20.5M in rev-share, with football accounting for 65.6%, men’s basketball accounting for 20.3% and women’s basketball accounting for 6.6%.
