Wisconsin and its NIL collective filed a complaint in state circuit court on Friday against Miami (FL) for alleged tortious interference involving the transfer of football student-athlete Xavier Lucas, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who further explains: “In a first-of-its-kind and, perhaps, a precedent-setting move,” Wisconsin is seeking unspecified financial damages, transparency and accountability from Miami for allegedly interfering with a binding revenue-share contract between Wisconsin and Lucas. “Wisconsin claims that Miami communicated with Lucas. ‘Knowingly inducing’ him, despite knowing he had entered a contract with the school, something it terms as ‘intentional’ interference that ‘was not justified or privileged’ and caused Lucas to ‘breach’ his contract.” From the suit: “Miami interfered with UW-Madison’s relationship with Student-Athlete A (Lucas) by making impermissible contact with him and engaging in tampering.” UW tells Dellenger that it “reluctantly” filed the suit but is “committed to ensuring integrity and fundamental fairness in the evolving landscape of college athletics.” The Big Ten has also released a statement in support of the suit: “We stand by our position that respecting and enforcing contractual obligations is essential to maintaining a level playing field. In addition to our legal action, we will continue to be proactive to protect the interests of our student-athletes, our program and the broader collegiate athletics community.” (link)

For years, South Carolina has offered an $86 athletics fee per semester ($172 annually) that allowed USC students to attend every Gamecock sporting event, with the exception of having to enter a lottery for the chance to attend football games. Those benefits will all remain, however there is now a new “athletics auxiliary fee” of $300 annually being added for students, on top of the $172 fee that’s already in place. The auxiliary fee could generate nearly $11.5M in new revenue, which the school notes will not go toward additional scholarships or revenue sharing. Instead, the Gamecocks say the new dollars will “continue student access to athletics events/ticket lottery, address increased event/program operating costs, and enhance the student experience across multiple USC sporting venues. Enhancements will include student centered in-game activity and promotions, facility upgrades and additional support for health/safety staffing at athletics events.” (link)

The Athletic’s Justin Williams and Grace Raynor take a look at how the Trump administration’s travel bans will impact international student-athletes and point out that “as written, the U.S. travel restrictions, mostly for countries in Africa and the Middle East, should directly impact only a small percentage of current international college athletes. The most recent NCAA data estimates there were roughly 23K international college athletes across all divisions in 2023-24. That equals about 4% of all college athletes, only a sliver of whom hail from the 19 restricted countries. The NCAA’s data on athlete country of origin, last updated in 2022, counted athletes from 12 of the 19 impacted countries, but only two produced more than a dozen athletes that year: Haiti (24) and Venezuela (126). Canada, for comparison, had the most international students with 4,408. … Because of the caveats for existing visa holders, the international college athletes most likely to be impeded by the ban would be those who need a U.S. visa, either new athletes or current athletes from the banned countries who might have traveled home for the summer on an expired visa.” As such, Green and Spiegel immigration attorney Ksenia Maiorova tells The Athletic that “I do not want my international athletes traveling abroad unless it’s a true emergency. It’s just not worth the risk. … In addition to the bans, you have to consider that a student-athlete could just be denied entry on a valid visa even if there is no ban.” More. (link)
