Tennessee Tech hires former Montana State Deputy AD for External Operations Casey Fox as its new AD. Fox: "I'm a competitive person, and when I came to Tech, I saw that same competitive drive on this campus. Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger reports that “commissioners received the latest version of the new NCAA governance model on Wednesday. The primary piece of the proposal – 65% weighted voting powers for A4 – remains unchanged. The DI Board of Directors will discuss at their meeting next week but no action is expected yet. The 65% percent voting powers provides the Big Ten, SEC, Big 12 and ACC control over legislation and rule-making in certain aspects – if they all agree. In this model, three of the four voting in the same way fails to reach the 51% threshold – a key point. (link); Also from Dellenger: “Something emerging at DI commissioners meetings: The annual cost to operate the College Sports Commission – and NIL Go – remains unclear. Non-A4 commissioners have been told that schools will be assessed annually and to prepare for something in the neighborhood of $50K. The power leagues are footing the bill for the implementation of the CSC, clearinghouse and cap management system. But schools, as well as NCAA headquarters, are expected to be responsible financially, in some form, for supporting the on-going costs of operation.” (link)
Extra Points publisher Matt Brown subsequently reports that “industry sources tell me Sacramento State is expected to announce tomorrow that they are withdrawing from the Big Sky and joining the Big West in everything but [football], effective July 1, 2026. And if they can't join FBS, I'm told their short-term plan is FCS Independent. My own thoughts: I was curious if Sac State would pull this move next. I know them joining the Big West has been in the works for the Olympic sports. And Sac State could put together an independent football schedule in 2026 and beyond, even as an FCS member, with a combo of FCS opponents and FBS opponents. Departing the Big Sky after pretty much publicly saying, ‘We'll be breaking up with you soon’ probably makes some sense even if it's not the exact way Sac State intended with its FBS independent hopes hitting a roadblock by the FBS Oversight Committee. I also hear the school is very unlikely to get the waiver approved by the DI Council next week.” (link)
Extra Points publisher Matt Brown provides more information on Sacramento State’s attempts to join FBS and explains: “Despite two FBS conferences in the West that are looking for new memberships (the MWC and Pac-12), nobody has extended an invitation to Sacramento State. In fact, industry sources familiar with conference realignment over the last few months have repeatedly told me that nobody has even come particularly close to inviting Sacramento State, despite the school’s very public campaign.” As for specifically why Sac State’s waiver request hasn’t been approved, Brown reports: “The idea that college sports governance has changed, and that the specific facts of the cases have changed from the 2017 Liberty situation, does have some merit, I think. Conference affiliation is arguably even more important in College Football Playoff and various FB committee governance, and the sport has been trending away from independents over the last few years. But it’s also entirely possible that Sacramento State’s very aggressive and public campaign simply turned some administrator minds against the school.” As for what the Hornets’ departure means for the Big Sky, Brown explains: “I’m told that the league doesn’t feel it necessarily has to expand, but for scheduling purposes, would prefer to have an even number of teams. Given realignment instability out West, I’d expect many schools to be very interested in potentially joining, with particular interest in the two Utah institutions without stable conference homes, Southern Utah and Utah Tech.” (link)
