The Wall Street Journal’s Jessica Mendoza sits down with NCAA President Charlie Baker, who talks about how payments will be regulated in the rev-share era, how the House settlement could reshape college sports, the impact of Title IX and more. On whether student-athletes can still be called amateurs in the rev-share era, Baker responds: “I never really liked that word very much, to tell you the truth. I prefer thinking about them as students who play sports. And, by the way, we've eliminated about 153 bylaws so far that deal with this question about amateurism, which was done contingent on the settlement being approved. And there's a bunch of others now that it's been approved that we'll be taking a look at as well. I would much rather have us focusing on what I would describe as, and I think this is where the settlement's going to take us, where we're worrying about things like having a really robust injury surveillance program, having a real robust program around mental health and health and well-being, having a really robust program around academic performance, having a robust program around sports betting, which by the way, as a health and well-being and a mental health issue is really big issue for kids in big-time college sports. I would much rather have us focusing on that stuff and less on this argument about what's an amateur.” Full podcast. (link)

ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports the “decision on whether or not to expand the NCAA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments for 2026 is expected to come in the next few weeks. The expansion would be to no more than 76 schools. The NCAA remains in talks with its media partners.” (link)

Extra Points publisher Matt Brown reports Southern Utah and Utah Tech will move from the WAC to the Big Sky, with Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger adding: “Per sources, the ASUN & WAC are forming an ‘alliance,’ where 5 FB-playing ASUN members will move in 2026 into the WAC, which will then rebrand as United Athletic Conference. […] The departure of the Utah schools + addition of 5 ASUN schools brings the United Athletic Conference in 2026 to 8 members, seven of them playing football: Tarleton, Abilene Christian, UT-Arlington, Eastern Kentucky, North Alabama, Austin Peay, Central Arkansas & West Georgia. The ASUN will be left with seven more like-minded basketball-centric schools. Those members include Bellarmine, Lipscomb, Queens, Jacksonville, North Florida, Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. The two conferences - the ASUN & UAC - will remain separate, hold individual championships & each retain their NCAA AQ, but will work together to leverage their collective assets such as a unified media package and a built-in scheduling agreement.” (link, link)

The DI Council voted to deny a waiver request from Sacramento State to transition to FBS, according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, who notes the “vote isn't *final* until the meeting concludes Wednesday.” (link)

Business of College Sports’ Kristi Dosh explains that “it was brought to my attention last week that a company (identified as Phoenix TF LLC in its contract) is offering to buy the back pay claims athletes have under the House settlement in exchange for receiving cash now. I have reviewed a copy of the contract and sent it to a half dozen or so of my fellow attorneys. The big pro? You don’t have to wait through appeals and risk it getting overturned or your amount decreasing. The big con? The athletes I spoke with who have received contracts with the company are being offered approximately $0.10 on the dollar. That means if the amount you are estimated to be receiving in back pay is $150K, you’re only getting $15K if you decide to cash out now with this company.” Stevens & Lee, P.C. attorney Ryan Mulvaney tells Dosh the practice of buying claims is common in bankruptcy cases where the creditors stand to lose a lot because of the debtor’s bankruptcy, but Dosh notes that “unless you have an immediate and urgent need for the money, you are not in this situation right now as an athlete due back pay from the House settlement.” Mulvaney adds: “Athletes should not be sold on fear, uncertainty and timing about the settlement and pending appeals. … I would not advise my clients to sign the deals. First, you’ve waited this long – what’s another few months after briefing is submitted for appeals to run their course? Not to mention, you’re selling your existing claim for pennies on the dollar. Understanding that financial circumstances are different for each person, entering into these types of agreements for little value in return on the claim makes little sense to me. I’m also concerned that athletes are selling their claims for the short money – you played, however, for your right to and earned the long money.” (link)
