Assistantship Positions

Please note: Assistantship positions are intended to complement the student’s program of study and a rationale may be required from the hiring department if the two are not clearly connected. Also, positions listed below may have already been filled. It is the student's responsibility to verify availability with the hiring departments.

Graduate Assistantship - 1 position available
Macomb campus - Fall 2024
Office of Outreach and Student Support

This full-time (20 hours/week) Graduate Assistantship works in the Office of Retention Initiatives for the 2024-2025 academic year. Graduate Assistants in the Office of Retention Initiatives focus on retention efforts including initiative design, review, and implementation. Graduate Assistants primarily perform direct outreach to students via phone, email, text, and other avenues of communication to share resources, support, and problem-solve. Graduate  Assistants meet directly with students to hold success meetings and interventions, as well as assist with data analytics and processing.

Direct outreach to students (70%); assist with office coverage, responding to emails, processing information (15%); maintain student records (10%); other duties as assigned (5%)

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Directly call, text, and email students to share resources, support, and problem solve
  • Meets with students in one-on-one (virtual, phone, or in-person) setting for timely interventions and resource sharing
  • Maintains student records and compiles data and reports associated with the retention efforts
  • Serves as facilitator of retention-focused sessions and coordinates additional educational classes, programs, and initiatives
  • Assist with compiling data, analyzation, and use
  • Collaborate with campus partners
  • Researches, recommends, develops and implements new initiatives, events, and programs that strengthen the student experience and enhance the likelihood of student retention
  • Develop institutional professional development trainings around the unique issues facing first year, first generation, and low-income students in collaboration with other student support services
  • Proactively assists student sin connecting with University resources
  • Serve as a resource to University community members regarding student policies and practices as well as campus resources
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Outreach and Student Support (or designee)

Requirements:

  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Must be accepted to WIU Graduate School for Fall 2024
  • Customer service experience
  • Be a self-starter
  • Experience working with social media/technology (i.e. Zoom, Microsoft Word/Excel, Google Suite, etc.)
  • Must be able to work at least one evening (Monday through Thursday, until 7:00 p.m.) per week

Graduate Assistantship - 2 positions available
Macomb campus - Summer 2024/Fall 2024
School of Education

The School of Education has openings for two positions to assist with the Master of Arts in Teaching program. These positions will begin during the Summer 2024 session and continue through the Fall 2024 semester.

Position Duties:

  • Organize licensure material
  • Data entry
  • Spreadsheet monitoring
  • File processing
  • Organize digital files
  • Other clerical duties as assigned

Requirements:

  • Fully accepted into a graduate program
  • Enrolled in at least 3 hours for the Summer 2024 session and 9 hours for the Fall 2024 semester
  • Have demonstrated strong communication (written and verbal) and organization skills
  • Strong oral English proficiency

Graduate Assistantship - 3 positions available

School of Education - America Reads Program (*Federal Work Study eligible only)

The School of Education has openings for the Fall 2024/Spring 2025 academic year with the America Reads Program. Candidates for these positions must be eligible to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for the 2024-2025 academic year and be eligible for Federal Work Study. *Only US Citizens or eligible non-citizens with an alien registration number are eligible to file the FAFSA.

Position Duties:

  • Assist in local grade school tutoring programs
  • Oversee volunteers
  • Recruit volunteers for the program
  • Write reports for the program
  • Tutor students when necessary
  • Assist professors in the School of Education (classroom prep, research, etc.) as needed

Requirements:

  • Fully accepted into a graduate program
  • Be available each afternoon 1:00 - 5:00 p.m.
  • Minimum 3.0 graduate GPA
  • Be a self-starter
  • Have strong communication and organization skills
  • Familiar with Excel, Word, etc
  • Strong oral English proficiency
  • Have strong professional dispositions
  • Must have reliable transportation

Athletics Facilities, Events, and Game Operations

The position of Graduate Assistant for Facilities, Events, and Game Operations is responsible for directly assisting the Assistant Athletic Director for Marketing and Game Operations and the Director of Equipment Operations and Facilities with the management of game day and athletics facilities operations.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • contacting and organizing game day staff
  • hosting visiting teams and officials
  • assisting in set-up and tear down of events
  • assisting with athletics facility scheduling, planning, and maintenance
  • other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • ability to lift up to 75 lbs
  • ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.

Athletics Creative Design

The position of Graduate Assistant for Creative Design is responsible for directly assisting media relations and marketing with design, creation, development, and production of all multimedia projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • producing, filming, and editing video content, including features, interviews, highlight packages, and commercials for the department website, social media, and video boards
  • creation of all department social media graphics and print materials
  • other duties as assigned

This position requires the ability to work flexible hours, including nights and weekends.
