May 17, 2023 - North Central College Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics Dr. Jessica Brown has announced the promotion of Jim Miller '86 to the position of senior director of athletics, effective June 1.

A fixture in the North Central athletic department since enrolling as a student in 1982, Miller has served as the Cardinals' athletic director since 2005, when he was named to the position following a national search.

Miller's new position will lend his leadership to the College's institutional advancement efforts, supporting the development of a sustainable plan for the athletic department's budgetary and fundraising needs.

"Jim knows what it takes to build and support championship-level athletic programs—from to diversity, equity, and inclusion; to coach and student-athlete development; to fundraising," Brown said. "I'm excited to see the athletics department continue to benefit from Jim's outstanding leadership in this new role."

Miller served as North Central's head men's wrestling coach and was an assistant football coach from 1989 to 2005. He is credited with reviving wrestling at the College and gaining national recognition for the program. Miller coached 28 Academic All-Americans, five Scholar All-American teams, and accumulated a program-best dual meet record of 139-84. In 1996-97, the Cardinals won the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) team championship. Miller also coached the Cardinals to seven CCIW runner-up finishes.

Since Miller's promotion to athletic director, North Central teams have won 21 NCAA Division III team national championships, including three in the 2022-2023 academic year (triathlon, football, women's wrestling); a fourth team (men's volleyball) finished as national runner up. On his watch, the Cardinals have also won 55 individual and relay national championships, 108 CCIW team championships and more than 700 national academic awards.

"Collaborating with our colleagues in institutional advancement will help us expand the resources necessary to support our student-athletes, coaches and staff," Miller said. "I think the athletics department and advancement team can learn a lot from one another and I'm excited to get started."

In 2010, Miller was honored as the 19th recipient of the Harold and Eva White First Citizen of the College Award, which is given annually to a student, faculty or staff member who exemplifies the best of North Central College. Miller was inducted into the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Hall of Fame in 2015, and received one of four NCAA Division III Athletic Director of the Year awards from the National Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in 2020.
