"D1.relocation was great from the beginning of the process through the end of the process in terms of communication and helping me set up my move. Their ongoing support was very helpful to ensure it was a smooth process in light of how challenging transitions can be." - Kimya Massey, Director of Athletics at the University of San Diego |

Where was former Arizona State Men’s Swim student-athlete & lawsuit namesake Grant House when the House settlement was announced? Ironically he was in Indianapolis for the U.S. National Championships & tells Sports Illustrated’s Pat Forde: “I was walking out of my brother Kyle’s hotel room with my family. It was actually very culminating to be wearing a Cassius Clay shirt, in Indianapolis, headquarters of the NCAA. It just felt right. It felt like the stars were aligned for that. What Cassius Clay stood for in a different time period, and a much different demographic, was advocating for what’s right and standing against what’s wrong. I believe that’s what this whole [lawsuit] cause has been for, athlete advocacy. Having the courage to take one step forward for the sake of athletes now, from a couple years past, righting the wrongs that have been for decades, and then especially for the hundreds of thousands of athletes going forward.” Forde also gets this from Louisville Swim & Dive HC Arthur Albiero: “The elephant in the room is, what are the implications for Olympic sports? My concern is that the value of Olympic sports, that scale has shifted a little bit. Producing Olympians, All-Americans, great GPAs, great citizens—where does that fit into the metrics now? It’s a dire moment.” USOPC Chief of Sport & Athlete Services/former Arizona State senior leader Rocky Harris adds: “It’s a spending problem. If you win in football, you need to invest more in it. If you lose in football, you need to invest more in it. It’s a never-ending problem.” (link)
The Athletic’s Justin Williams gathered feedback from around the industry on the House settlement including this from a power conference AD: “Right now it feels like Monopoly. We’re planning to spend to the cap, but we have to figure out how we’re getting there. If you cut a million somewhere, sure that helps, but if you cut $5 (million) or $10 million, you’re really hurting your department.” An anonymous “power conference” personnel director tells Williams: “The top (football) teams are going to cost $40-50 million a year. That’s where this is going. Anyone who thinks different is nuts.” Another anonymous personnel director: “If you tell a booster or business owner they can’t give a star player $2 million, there will be lawsuits. There’s no enforcing this. Fair market value? F— Deloitte. This is going to get even crazier.” Lots more. (link)
Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger with a Friday drop: “In a somewhat stunning move, ESPN is finalizing an agreement to extend its sublicense package with TNT Sports to include the CFP semifinal round, sources tell @YahooSports. The deal would grant TNT Sports broadcasting rights to one CFP semifinal annually in 2026, 2027 and 2028.” (link)
In other post-season football news, for the first time since 1945, the Ivy League will participate in the FCS Playoffs. Sports Illustrated’s Bryan Fischer: “According to everybody in and around the league who spoke to Sports Illustrated in recent weeks about the decision, it was the fact that this effort was spearheaded by the athletes—and not just the football players who stood to benefit. A constant refrain was that it was not equitable that one sport was prevented from joining the NCAA’s postseason structure.” (link)
Pac-12 Commissioner Teresa Gould prefers the “at-large” College Football Playoff model rather than one that awards AQs and tells The Mercury News’ Jon Wilner she sees the Pac-12 on a tier between the Power 4 and Group of 5. “We are in a lane of our own, and the metrics support that. We’re closer to the ACC and Big 12 than to the other folks.” While Wilner notes that some may scoff at that assessment, he notes Gould’s position is “based on data exclusively from a narrow timeframe: the past four years, which coincide with the implementation of NIL and the transfer portal. Gould views performance data from the 2010s as completely outdated, akin to counting with an abacus.” Gould explains that the “marketplace has changed drastically. The longer historical metrics don’t make sense to me.” Using the aforementioned parameters, Wilner points out that “six of the seven teams in the rebuilt Pac-12 (86%) have been ranked in the AP poll, compared to 36% of the schools in the American and 33% in the restructured Mountain West. Five of the seven teams in the rebuilt Pac-12 (71%) have been ranked by the CFP selection committee, compared to 29% of the American schools and 22% of those in the Mountain West.” Whatever the format is, Gould says: “I don’t think the model changes our mindset in terms of what we’re looking for in future members. We’re looking for schools that are aligned, on a positive trajectory and willing to invest.” More. (link)
On the Canzano & Wilner podcast, Big Sky Commissioner Tom Wistrcill expands on his governance position, noting the Power 4 – and particularly the Big Ten and SEC – have essentially bilaterally decided the future of college sports. “I look at everything from the CFP piece to them sorting that out amongst themselves to this new College Sports Commission, the CSC, which is essentially like a coup happened. It’s like all of a sudden we were members of the NCAA and now we're members of the NCAA and we're going to be members of CSC, and the P4 has determined all the rules, regulations and costs inside the CSC, and none of us had any say in it at all. It’s just, ‘Okay, here's the rules you're going to follow.’ And we still don't know, as we tape this right here, what the costs are going to be. So, the whole decisionmaking process around Division I athletics is really cloudy, confusing and hard to explain as a commissioner. Our presidents and ADs are looking to me for some answers, and I feel like I have the cloudiest crystal ball in history.” Wistrcill also says the Big Sky is keeping a close eye on the mediation between the Mountain West and Pac-12. “It’s over two weeks now. One of the attorneys I talked to yesterday said it’s highly unusual to have it last this long. So, why is it lasting this long? Obviously, it’s got to be about money, right? And the implications for the decisions must be so dramatic one way or the other that I get the feeling that, like, today they’re just sitting there staring at each other. … A lot happens after that depending on what the outcome could be. … If the Mountain West loses a bunch of members, they’ve got to decide do they want to survive? And if they want to survive, they could come calling on some Big Sky schools, and that could have a dramatic impact on us.” (link)
