Hawaii has named former UCLA Chief Strategy Officer Matt Elliott as its next AD. UH President Wendy Hensel: "I'm excited to welcome Matt, with his extensive experience in Division I athletics and strong roots in Hawaiʻi, to the UH 'ohana. Our student-athletes, coaches, staff and dedicated fans will find Matt to be an exceptional leader with the passion and expertise to elevate UH athletics and guide us through the complex challenges facing collegiate sports today." Elliott: "I am committed to leading a program that reflects the pride and excellence of our local community. It will be a privilege to partner with our student-athletes, coaches and fans to chart an ambitious and unified path forward." Elliott’s appointment is subject to approval by the UH Board of Regents at a special meeting slated for June 16. If approved, Elliott is scheduled to begin his appointment no later than July 1, with a base salary of $425,004 and additional performance-based incentives. Elliott has spent the last two years as Senior Director of Policy and Public Affairs at the Hawaii Community Foundation. NCAA President Charlie Baker tells the Boston Globe’s Michael Silverman that the House (settlement) “as envisioned does a few things that I think are pretty important. The first thing it does is it moves the center of NIL gravity away from third parties, who, for the most part, are not well known and not really accountable to anybody, they don’t have to register or report to anyone, and it creates a center of gravity that’s really around the school, and having the schools be the prime relationship around NIL, the athletic development piece, and the personal development piece all where it belongs.” Baker in a wide-ranging Q&A also explains what the NCAA is seeking from Congress: “One is to give us some kind of state preemption, because we have so many state laws now that are basically designed to create competitive advantages for the schools in their states. It’s not just an issue around a level playing field in NCAA conferences. There are maybe 40 states with different rules about all kinds of things. Money made from NIL isn’t taxable in some states, or you don’t have to comply with conference or NCAA rules. There’s some states where it’s more like an order that you not comply with conference or NCAA rules. I mean, it’s wild.” In regards to fighting efforts from student-athletes seeking additional years of eligibility, Baker notes: “In sort of an odd way, this has helped us with our conversation with people in Congress because we’ve had a number of folks we’ve talked to who have said, ‘That eligibility thing, I can see why you’re concerned about that one and why you might need some help from us to be able to set a standard around eligibility.’ … You start to chip away a lot of the rules and standards we have around academics, which I think makes everybody very nervous, for all kinds of pretty good reasons. So, it’s one where a lot of people in Washington, both members of Congress and their staffs, have said, ‘Yeah, OK, I understand why that’s a problem and why you would be here to talk to us about that.’” Full interview. James Madison AD Matt Roan and Football HC Bob Chesney weigh in on the role agents continue to play in college sports, and Chesney observes: “It seems like everybody has an agent now. Everybody has numbers that they're being told, whether they're true or not, whether those things actually come to fruition for them or not. … It almost seems like it's a fantasy world that we're living in at times. The percentage that they're taking away from these kids on top of it, it's really a shame. That's got to get fixed.” Chesney takes particular exception with the agents shopping players around without the players’ knowledge: “I think that's where those things got to get cleaned up just a little bit more. I try to have as little [to do] as I can with the agents, and I try to have as much [to do] as I can with that particular player. If we hit a sticking point with an agent, I'll make sure that I have a good conversation with that player.” Roan agrees with Chesney that a certification process for agents would be beneficial and says: “I think that, again, just that more regulation in that agency space, not because it necessarily makes it easier for us. I think my motivation would be, and I think Coach Chesney would agree, that regulation, hopefully, is serving the best interests of those student-athletes that those agents are actually purporting to represent.” (link)

President Brad Chamberlain: “The decision to change Luther's athletic conference affiliation was not made lightly. The decision followed an intentional period of discernment that involved Luther's leadership team, its Board of Regents, its athletic administrators, and its coaching staff. […] In the Midwest Conference, Luther finds partner institutions that share our philosophy towards athletics and that match the geographical diversity of our student body. When we considered all of our affiliations, including athletics, we took into consideration that the Midwest Conference more closely aligns with our academic partners in the ACM (Associated Colleges of the Midwest), and that Luther's strengths, challenges, strategic priorities, and the geographical origins of its student body fit well with the MWC."
