Summit League Deputy Commissioner Myndee Kay Larsen and Cal State Northridge Executive Associate AD Valerie Richardson sit down with ADU’s Steph Garcia Cichosz to discuss the leadership skills they’ve gained from working both on campus and in the conference office. The duo discuss the broad-based learning opportunities available at the league level and the importance of creating effective communication skills when working with conference membership; from the campus perspective, Larsen and Richardson speak to the value of connecting regularly with student-athletes and making a tangible impact on their collegiate experience. As for administrators seeking a shot at the Big Chair and hesitant to spend time at a conference office, Larsen explains: “You can build an athletic director’s resume sitting in a conference office simply because you have access to all kinds of institutions – private, public, land-grant, research. It gives you a good overview and helps you figure out what kind of leader you want to be.”
