Spellman Announced as New Head Women's Volleyball Coach

5/9/2023 9:41:00 AM

ARLINGTON, Va. - Marymount University Athletics has named Shane Spellman as the new head women's volleyball coach, announced by Vice President and Director of Athletics Jill McCabe.

"I am incredibly honored and excited to join the Marymount University community as the new women's volleyball coach," Spellman said. "I look forward to working with such talented student-athletes and helping them reach their full potential both on the court and in the classroom."

Spellman comes to Marymount after being the Director of Player Development for Starlings Volleyball out of Falls Church, Va., a role he has held since October of 2019. During this time, he has spent time on the high school court, having coaching stints at both Wakefield High School, where he has been the head coach since 2021, and Thomas Jefferson High, where he was an assistant during the spring of 2021.

Spellman has also been the head 18s coach for Virginia Volleyball Club, where he handles all facets of the club.

Adding to his experience, Spellman brings to Marymount a wealth of collegiate coaching time. Most recently, he was the assistant beach volleyball coach at Division I Tulane University during the 2017-18 academic year, where he was responsible for many of the day-to-day operations of the program while spearheading statistical analysis to help with player development.

Prior to Spellman's time at Tulane, he was the assistant volleyball coach at NAIA Cardinal Stritch University for both the men's and women's programs, helping with day-to-day operations and recruiting efforts for the programs. During October of 2016, he was the named the interim head coach and helped the team finish second in the CCAC North Division and in a tie for fifth in the conference tournament.

During his playing years, Spellman made three separate appearances to the Division III NCAA Tournament from 2012-14 at Rivier University, while being a two-time Second Team All-Great Northeast Athletic Conference award winner.

He holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Rivier and a Master of Science in Sports Management from Cardinal Stritch.

Spellman takes over a Marymount program that finished 19-15 overall last season, 5-1 in conference play, en route to their third Atlantic East Conference Title with an NCAA Regional appearance.

"I want to extend a special thank you to Ellen O'Brien and the search committee for their dedication and diligence throughout the hiring process," Spellman said. "Their commitment to the search is a testament to the university's values and I am grateful for the opportunity to be a part of something so special."

He is slated to begin his duties May 15th.
