Forbes Signs Contract Extension

May 12, 2023 | Baseball

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – University of North Carolina Baseball Coach Scott Forbes, who led the Tar Heels to the NCAA tournament in each of his first two years, including the NCAA Super Regionals in 2022, has signed a five-year contract extension. The new contract runs through June 30, 2028.

"Carolina Baseball continues to be in excellent hands under the leadership of Coach Scott Forbes,'' UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said. "He is dedicated not only to developing strong baseball players, but also to mentoring successful students who care about academics and giving back to the Carolina community. He is committed to winning at the highest level and cares deeply about the well-being of everyone around him. He leads our program in a first-class manner, and we are happy that he will remain our coach for years to come."

In nearly three seasons leading the Tar Heels, Forbes has compiled a 101-66 record and joined his predecessor, Mike Fox, as the only two coaches to lead the program to the NCAA Tournament in each of his first two seasons as head coach. In his first year at the helm in 2021, Forbes guided the program into the postseason beneath the shadow of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Last season, Forbes directed a late-season resurgence that resulted in the Tar Heels' eighth ACC Baseball Championship title and 10th NCAA Super Regional appearance. UNC finished inside the top 15 in each major college baseball poll.

"Being the head coach at the University of North Carolina is a tremendous honor," Forbes said. "Two of the foundational pillars of our program are thankfulness and servanthood – they ring particularly true for me today.

"I'm extremely grateful to Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz, Bubba Cunningham and his staff, and our distinguished Board of Trustees for their continued confidence in me and their support of our program. I also appreciate our tremendous donors who mean so much to our program, as well as the current and former head coaches at UNC who have been and continue to be great teammates. I'm blessed to have the best family support in the world, and I thank Mandy, Hannah and Ally for all they do.

"UNC baseball begins and ends with our student-athletes. This program will always be about our players, they are why we do what we do. I am humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve them and hungry for what lies ahead. To the Tar Heel baseball diehards: You are such a huge part of our success, let's keep packing the Bosh and continue moving Tar Heel Baseball forward together."

Forbes is in his 22nd season as a member of the Tar Heels' coaching staff and his 18th consecutive year on staff. He has helped lead UNC to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, seven trips to the College World Series, seven ACC Coastal Division titles, and four ACC tournament championships.

UNC has won more than 900 games with Forbes on staff, averaging 42 victories per season. This season the Tar Heels have drawn a school-record average of 2,809 fans per game and will attract more than 100,000 people during the regular season for the first time.

In conjunction with Carolina Baseball's success, Forbes and the program continue to see key improvements to Boshamer Stadium. The weight room inside the clubhouse was completely renovated before the start of the 2023 season, and a new video board was installed mid-season.
