ALLIANCE, Ohio – Asheli Freed has been named the new head coach for women's soccer at the University of Mount Union.

"I'm truly honored and thankful to be named the next women's soccer coach at Mount Union," Freed said, "I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to Director of Athletics Mike Parnell, for providing me with this incredible opportunity to lead a talented group of student athletes."

Freed, a native of Enon Valley, Pa., spent a year as an assistant coach at Glenville State College before serving as the assistant at Mount Union the previous two seasons.

"Asheli has been such a positive and steady contributor to the program since her arrival in 2021," Athletic Director Mike Parnell said. "Promoting her into the role of head coach was well deserved based on her commitment over the past two years."

Freed is a 2020 graduate of Davis and Elkins College in West Virginia, where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in sport management and had a minor in business.

"Mount Union has a long-standing tradition of both academic and athletic excellence, and I am eager to work at such a competitive university both in the classroom and on the field," Freed said. "I look forward to contribute my experience and passion to foster a culture of hard work, dedication and teamwork among our student-athletes, as we strive for success both on and off the field."

During her playing career as a Senator, Freed was a captain and four-year impact player, helping her team win the 2016 Great Midwest Athletic Conference and make the NCAA Tournament, while picking up All-Freshman and CCA All-Midwest Region honors. Freed led her team in both goals and assists over the next three seasons and was named a GMAC Honorable Mention in the 2018 season and earned All-Mountain East Conference honors in the 2019 season.

"I cannot wait to hit the ground running and start working with our student-athletes, staff and supporters as we begin this exciting new journey together," Freed said.

Freed's first official day as head coach was on May 1.
