Men's Soccer Announces New Associate Head Coach

LOS ANGELES – The LMU men's soccer team is pleased to announce the hiring of associate head coach Dean Johnson.  
 
Johnson joins the Lions from Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, WV. Johnson led the Senators to a 33-3-4 record in his two seasons at the helm. The staff was named the Division II Atlantic Region Staff of the Year in 2021 after the Senators went 18-1-3 and made it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.  
 
In 2022, Johnson led the Senators to a 16-3-1 record and had the team ranked No. 1 in the country.  
 
Prior to Davis and Elkins, Johnson was the gaffer at Northeast Texas Community College. The Eagles went 43-16-3 in his tenure including an improvement from 7-12 in 2017 to 17-3-2 in 2018. Johnson helped place 25 players at 22 colleges during his time there. 
 
Johnson also spent time at the NAIA level with Wayland Baptist University in Plainview, Tex. as an assistant. With Johnson's help, the Pioneers won their first national championship in any sport in 2017.  
 
He has worked professionally in USL League Two with the Des Moine Menace and the West Virginia Chaos. With the Menace, he was nominated for the 2022 USL League Two Coach of the Year award. He led the Menace to an undefeated regular season and an opening round win in the 2022 US Open Cup.  
 
Johnson holds multiple coaching licenses from various authorities. He holds a National Diploma from the United Soccer Coaches, 'D' and 'C' licenses from the United States Soccer Federation and a Level 1 Talent Identification License and a Level 2 Coaching License from the Football Association in England.  
 
He earned an Associate of Arts degree in physical education from Northwest College in Powell, Wyo. Where he registered 19 goals and 30 assists while captaining the soccer team. He received a Bachelor of Science in sports management from Bluefield College in Bluefield, Virg. In 2015 and competd for their soccer team, recording 10 goals and 10 assists while leading the Rams to its first national tournament. He has also received a Master of Education from Wayland Baptist University. 
 
This is also an opportune time to announce that Christian Madrigal is entering his third season as the Lions assistant coach. Madrigal served as the team's director of operations and a volunteer assistant until 2021 when he was moved into a paid role.
