Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark tells Front Office Sports’ David Rumsey the league is no longer considering private equity investment: “We’ve explored all that. We did it probably for the better part of the year. We’re not ready to go in that direction, but we know what the options are out there. We’ve been educated at the highest levels. [...] The board’s not ready right now. And there’s probably lots of reasons for that. There are so many different things going on right now. But I think we’re well informed. We know what’s going on in that world. We hired a bank to consult and give us direction—show us what the optionality is out there. And we’re just not ready to jump in just yet.” What about naming rights for the league? “We’re 16 strong now, coast to coast. I think there are ways that we can monetize our business without necessarily giving up our name. So, not that it’s off the table, but I would say it’s probably on pause right now, because we are finding other ways to grow the commercial side of the business without necessarily having to give up the equity that we’re building.” (link)

The San Diego Union-Tribune’s Mark Zeigler reports San Diego State, Boise State, Utah State, Fresno State & Colorado State all officially notified the Mountain West of their intention to exit the league ahead of today’s deadline when exit fees doubled from $18M to $36M. Aztecs AD John David Wicker at a donor event last week: “I’m very pleased where we are from a Pac-12 standpoint. Obviously, we have to add another team. That will happen. I have a good idea of what our TV is going to look like with the Pac-12. Right now, we’re trying to wrap up various items around that. But we have a really good idea of what that will be, and we’re pleased with what that is going to be. It feels like the next four or five weeks, there’s a lot that’s going to happen that’s going to help dictate what we’re doing moving forward.” (link)

Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman joins Collegiate Sports Associates Founder Todd Turner on the latest episode of The Journey to discuss her career path, including the lessons she learned from former NBA Commissioner David Stern, as well as the changing dynamics of college athletics and the need to ensure academics remains a core piece of the equation. On the latter point, Ackerman explains that “where I think we have to get to, Todd, is some place where academics remain critical and the athletes are not just hired guns, but they’re students who are in good academic standing at their schools in pursuit of a degree. If we lose that, then ‘college sports’ is over. It’s something else. It’s not college sports. So I hope we can hold onto that.” Ackerman also emphasizes the need to hold onto March Madness “more or less in its current form. That may be down the list of things to worry about, but that’s one of the greatest events in sports as far as I’m concerned. … So, holding onto that and the magic of that and the cinderella components of that I think is critically important.” Furthermore, Ackerman believes “we need a system where the NCAA has the ability to make some rules. It’s a national enterprise. It runs national competitions. Schools from around the country compete against each other, and we need some uniformity in the operation of that enterprise. And right now everything under the sun is prone to a legal challenge, and it’s no way to run a railroad.
