Mihaela Kosi steps down as Nevada Ski head coach

RENO, Nev. - Nevada Ski head coach Mihaela Kosi announced Wednesday that she will step down from her position.

"I have great pride in the accomplishments of my student-athletes and the efforts of so many to make the return of skiing to Nevada so successful. But, at this time, I have decided to step away from my coaching role," Kosi said. "I recently made a decision that I believe is best for my personal life. It was a difficult choice because I loved the working environment and seeing student-athletes putting in the hard work to achieve their goals. I am proud of what we have accomplished as a team, and I know the future of this team is bright. I am excited to see it continue to grow."

"I would like to thank President Sandoval and Stephanie Rempe for this incredible opportunity," Kosi continued. "The passion and desire of our student-athletes and the Reno-Tahoe ski community gives me great confidence that the program will continue on in capable hands."

Kosi was named the program's head coach upon the announcement of Nevada Ski's return last Aug. 31. She will remain in her role during the leadership transition.

A national search for Nevada's next alpine skiing head coach will begin immediately.

"The return of skiing to Nevada has been an exciting time, and truly a team effort. Mihaela has done an incredible job in building the foundation of the program in its return to competition, and set Nevada Ski up for future success," said Nevada Athletic Director Stephanie Rempe.

In its return to competition this past season, Nevada finished 18th at the National Collegiate Championships, scoring 21 points. Iver Walday Naess represented the Wolf Pack at the event, held in Lake Placid, N.Y., finishing 18th in slalom and 23rd in giant slalom.

The Pack also recorded six top-20 finished at the RMISA Championships in February, led by a 10th-place performance by Andreas Smith in men's slalom, and Sixtine Piccard's 12th-place finish in women's slalom.

Prior to being named head coach at Nevada, Kosi served as Sierra Nevada University's alpine skiing head coach from 2018-22. There, Kosi oversaw an Eagles program which captured a total of 16 team national titles at the U.S. Collegiate Ski and Snowboard Association (USCSA) Collegiate National Championships, including eight team titles at the 2022 championships.
