Union, N.J. (6/9/24) – Shelley Sheiner has announced his retirement as head coach of the men's lacrosse program at Kean University.
"The past 21 years as head coach of my alma mater has been a true gift and I will cherish every memory and relationship", stated Sheiner. "I would like to thank everyone who has supported the program over the years and wish Kean Men's Lacrosse and Kean Athletics nothing but the best."
Sheiner retires as the winningest coach in program history with 223 wins, while qualifying for the postseason in 18 of his 21 seasons at the helm.
In fall of 2003, Sheiner was named the sixth head coach in the history of the program after serving two years as an assistant coach at Kean. Prior to that, Sheiner served as the head boy's lacrosse coach at Indian Hills High School in Oakland, N.J., from 1997-2001. During his tenure, Sheiner guided the program to back-to-back state tournament appearances (1999 & 2000) and was named the New Jersey Lacrosse Coach of the Year for the Rizk Division in 2000 when Indian Hills finished 13- 5.
In the summer of 2014, Sheiner was an Assistant Coach for the Israel Lacrosse Association. Sheiner helped the Israeli National team to a seventh place finish in the World Games. The event was held in Denver, Colorado and the Israeli National Team featured former Kean standout Richard Cheifitz, who was a three-time USILA All-American.
Just a few weeks ago, Sheiner was named the North Head Coach for the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Division III Senior All-Star Game. He led the North squad to a 16-15 overtime win over the South All-Star team.
Sheiner graduated from Kean College in 1995 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology and a Bachelor of Science in political science and criminal justice. He earned his master's degree in special education/initial certification from William Paterson University in 2001.
Sheiner is an active member in the New Jersey Lacrosse Foundation and a sitting member on the New Jersey Lacrosse Hall of Fame Committee and the Kirst Cup Committee . He is a special education teacher at Roy W. Brown Middle School in Bergenfield, NJ. with over 28 years of education experience teaching children with special needs.
