UE Alum & Former Head Coach Wilcox Returns To Lead UE Swimming & Diving

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – Toby Wilcox, a long-time successful collegiate head coach, has been selected to lead the men's and women's swimming & diving program at the University of Evansville, Director of Athletics Dr. Ziggy Siegfried announced today.

Wilcox has earned eight conference "Coach of the Year" honors during his collegiate coaching career, which began at UE in the mid-1980s.  Wilcox served as UE's assistant swim coach from 1986 through 1988, before leading the program from 1988 through 1997 and earning three Midwestern Collegiate Conference "Coach of the Year" honors.

"Coach Wilcox has achieved great success throughout his career by promoting academic excellence, providing an outstanding student-athlete experience, achieving competitive success, and engaging with the community and alumni. Wilcox returns to the University of Evansville after spending the past 13 years at Birmingham Southern College (BSC) where he started the swimming and diving program. Wilcox built the Birmingham Southern program into a perennial power in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA), earning 16 SAA team titles on the men's and women's sides. He has coached 121 individual SAA champions, 57 SAA relay champions, and helped direct 35 student-athletes to the NCAA Division III National Championships. During his tenure, Wilcox helped produce 13 SAA "Swimmers of the year," seven SAA "Divers of the Year," and 11 SAA "Newcomers of the Year." Wilcox earned five SAA "Coach of the Year" honors during his tenure at Birmingham Southern.

Prior to BSC, Wilcox was entrenched in the swimming and diving community in Evansville. Wilcox was the head coach at the University of Evansville for nine seasons, from 1988-97, and was named the Midwestern Collegiate Conference (MCC) Coach of the Year three times. Wilcox coached 24 athletes to individual titles, and three MCC Swimmers of the year. Prior to his stint as head coach, Wilcox served as Evansville's Assistant Swim Coach from 1986 to 1988, and was also head swim coach for the University of Evansville Aquatic Club from 1984 to 1993.

Wilcox knows what it is like to compete at UE, as he earned both MCC and Heartland Collegiate Conference MVP honors for the Purple Aces in 1984.  Wilcox was a two-time team MVP in 1983 and 1984, while also serving as a team captain for UE.  He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in History from UE in 1985.

A native of Rensselaer, Indiana, Wilcox and his wife Cathy, have two children: Cole and Reghan.
