Callahan Promoted to Senior Assistant Director of Athletics for Sport and Recreation Services

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Vassar College Director of Athletics & Physical Education Michelle Walsh has officially announced that Mike Callahan has been promoted to Senior Assistant Director of Athletics for Sport and Recreation Services.

Within this expanded role, Mike will spearhead Vassar's efforts to improve recreational facilities on campus, including the exploration of additional outdoor recreational spaces. He will also serve as the point person with campus activities, academic departments and others for recreational/student organization use of athletic spaces.

"I'm thrilled to announce that Mike Callahan has been promoted to Senior Assistant Director of Athletics for Sport and Recreation Services," stated Walsh.  "Mike has provided excellent leadership of our recreation, varsity club sports, and life fitness programs in his eight years with the college.  I continue to be excited for the future of each of these areas as he takes on this expanded role."

Callahan joined the Vassar College athletics department in December of 2014 as the Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports and Recreation where he has enhanced the intramural offerings and programs at Vassar College, while overseeing summer camps as well as the department's four Varsity Club teams of men's and women's rugby and rowing. He also took over all Life Fitness classes and programs in 2015.

Prior to joining Vassar, Callahan served as the Coordinator of Recreation and Intramurals at Iona College in New Rochelle, NY. While part of the Gaels' athletic department, Callahan was responsible for implementing, coordinating, and overseeing the intramural programs at IC. He also managed the athletic facilities, including coordinating a staff of two full-time interns and over 100 student workers.

Callahan assumed his role at Iona after serving as an Recreation and Intramurals Assistant at IC, as he helped train students, arranged travel for the 21 Division I athletic programs, and managed student-worker payroll among other duties.

A 2009 graduate of MCLA, Callahan was a four-year member and senior captain of the men's basketball team. He was a two-year member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at MCLA, and also served as the MASCAC SAAC representative for the Trailblazers. He was honored with the Sixth Star Award, given to the player that exceeds expectations.

Upon graduation from MCLA in 2009 with a B.S. in business administration, Callahan began his master's work at Manhattanville College in Purchase, NY, finishing his M.S. in Sport Business Management in August of 2011.
