Navarre retires as Augsburg women's soccer coach

Mike NavarreMINNEAPOLIS -- Mike Navarre, who led the Augsburg University women's soccer program over a 24-year career, announced his retirement from head coaching duties on February 15, 2023.
 
A two-time Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Coach of the Year (2014, 2017), Navarre led the Auggies to a 235-154-48 (.593) record in his 24 seasons, including a 133-85-30 (.597) mark in MIAC play, the most overall wins among MIAC active coaches.
 
Teams Navarre coached won MIAC regular-season titles three times (2014, 2017, 2019), while finishing second three times (2012, 2015, 2016). Additionally, Navarre's teams won two MIAC Playoff Championships (2014, 2016) and finished as the MIAC Playoff Runner Up three times (2012, 2018, 2019). The Auggies qualified for NCAA Division III national tournament play three times (2014, 2016, 2019) under Navarre's leadership.
 
Since 1999, Augsburg players have been recognized with six United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA) All-America selections, three D3soccer.com All-America selections, and 25 United Soccer Coaches/NSCAA All-Region selections. Five players who played for Navarre have been inducted into Augsburg's Athletic Hall of Fame.
 
The Auggies also produced impressive results in the classroom during Navarre's tenure. Auggies earned United Soccer Coaches/NSCAA Scholar All-America honors six times and Scholar All-Region honors 17 times since 2008. Augsburg teams have been honored with United Soccer Coaches/NSCAA Team Academic Awards every year since 2009, carrying a team grade-point average of 3.30 or better each year.
 
"While I am grateful for my time at Augsburg, I am ready to say 'yes' to new adventures and challenges," Navarre said.  "I carry with me dear friendships for years to come."
 
Navarre also served as the coach of Augsburg's men's soccer team from 1999 to 2003, and served as an instructor in Augsburg's health, physical education, and exercise science department.
 
Prior to coming to Augsburg in 1999, Navarre served as a volunteer assistant for one of the most successful programs in the history of intercollegiate athletics, the University of North Carolina women's soccer team under Coach Anson Dorrance. In 2011, Navarre earned his Ph.D. in Kinesiology (specializing in Sport Psychology) from the University of Minnesota, and he has served Augsburg's athletic department and teams as a sport psychology specialist.
 
A search for a new head coach will begin in the coming weeks.
