Jim Lyons, Director of Athletics at Russell Sage College, will serve on the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Committee, as part of a four-year term that runs from September 1, 2024, through August 2028.

Lyons joins a distinguished group of coaches and administrators from the Empire 8 to serve on an NCAA national committee.

"I am honored to have been selected to sit on the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Committee for the next four years,” said Lyons. “Committees like this one ensure that Division III student athletes have the highest quality experience possible when they qualify for postseason NCAA Tournament play. Being named to this committee allows me to return to my roots in lacrosse, and to help advance the strengths of one of the greatest championships in Division III. I look forward to working with Will Hopkins from the NCAA as well as with the other returning members of the committee over my term of service.”

Lyons, who also serves as the Empire 8’s Second Vice President, was named Director of Athletics at Russell Sage in October 2022. He has nearly 30 years of men’s lacrosse coaching experience, having served as an assistant coach a Division I Princeton University and head coach at SUNY Potsdam, Goucher College and most notably, SUNY Geneseo. In 16 seasons at Geneseo, Lyons guided the Knights to the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2004, 2006 and 2007. In 2006, Geneseo advanced to the NCAA National Quarterfinals and finished with a 13-3 record.

Lyons was a three-time SUNYAC Men’s Lacrosse Coach of the Year (2002, 2004 and 2006), while earning the USILA Division III National Coach of the Year Award in 2004.

“Given Jim’s incredible accomplishments as a lacrosse coach, he is going to be an outstanding representative for the Empire 8 and sport of lacrosse,” said Empire 8 Executive Director Chuck Mitrano.

Lyons previously served as the chair of the NCAA Division III Men’s Lacrosse Committee in 2010, after serving the previous three years on the committee. He also served as the chair of USILA North South Division I, II and III Senior All-Star Game from 2010-2017.
