PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Brown University Division of Athletics and Recreation, in conjunction with Teamworks Influencer, will launch the BRUNO Exchange, a tool to enable Brown University student-athletes to benefit from their name, image, and likeness.

Part of an expanded partnership with Teamworks, Brown Athletics has established the BRUNO Exchange as a resource for student-athletes to connect with interested businesses, streamlining the process of generating business activity related to their name, image, and likeness (NIL). The Bears will provide content for all student-athletes in the Influencer platform, making it a one-stop shop for social media photos, videos, NIL marketplace, and more.

"We are excited to expand our partnership with Teamworks to include Influencer and the BRUNO Exchange as a resource for all student-athletes," said M. Grace Calhoun '92, Ph.D., the Chancellor Samuel M. Mencoff '78 Vice President for Athletics and Recreation at Brown "This provides a valuable marketplace for businesses and individuals to find our student-athletes, connect our Bears with them on potential NIL opportunities, and offers creative content in a centralized location."

"We are excited to partner with Brown to launch a fee-free NIL marketplace," said Teamworks Influencer General Manager Sean Kelly. "The launch of the Bruno Exchange will unlock new opportunities for their student-athletes, allowing them to monetize their brand and pursue NIL deals at a larger scale."

BRUNO Exchange is a custom-designed student-athlete NIL business registry for businesses, collectives, donors, alumni, fans, and others wishing to connect specifically with student-athletes at Brown. After a business, collective, or individual registers on the BRUNO Exchange, they can access a searchable database of Brown student-athletes and filter through a variety of criteria. They can message the student-athlete directly in the application or request the student-athlete's contact information (or that of their representative) to start a discussion about an NIL transaction. Influencer and Brown will not be involved in any of the negotiations.

Once a NIL agreement is reached, a customized reporting form, which is compliant with Brown's Name, Image, and Likeness guidelines, is generated and forwarded to the institution. The platform also includes a payment processing tool to pay the student-athletes securely. It will be consolidated into a 1099 form that lives in the student-athletes Influencer app for more efficient tax reporting.

Teamworks Influencer Local Exchange: How It Works
Influencer provides a customized NIL exchange as an extension of Brown's athletics website where the school can send any business, individual, or collective seeking to bring NIL opportunities to its student-athletes. Once registered, businesses can search, communicate, pay, and report on behalf of student-athletes they're transacting with, streamlining the student-athletes' compliance and tax reporting responsibilities in their existing Influencer app experience.

FAQ
What is the BRUNO Exchange?

The BRUNO Exchange is a student-athlete NIL business registry, custom-designed for businesses, donors, alumni, and other interested NIL dollars wishing to connect with Brown student-athletes. Registered businesses can search, filter, and initiate conversations with student-athletes to discuss an NIL deal. Once the NIL deal between a registered business and a student-athlete is completed, the business will use the BRUNO Exchange to create a transaction that will produce a direct payment to the student-athlete and automate a disclosure to the Influencer Verified Compliance Ledger. The institution does not have to get involved in the deal. All transactions within the local exchange are consolidated into one 1099 at the end of the year for easier tax reporting purposes for registered businesses and athletes.

What is Name, Image & Likeness?
As of July 1, 2021, student-athletes competing in NCAA intercollegiate athletics are permitted to receive compensation for the use of their name, image, or likeness (NIL) for commercial activities, including endorsements through traditional and social media, appearances, entrepreneurial activities, in-kind deals, autographs and more, per NCAA guidelines and Brown University NIL protocols.

Does the state of Rhode Island have a NIL Policy?
No.

Can a University employee or coach help arrange a deal for an athlete?
No. University employees, including coaches and members of the athletics department, CANNOT negotiate deals or contracts. However, they can direct student-athletes to NIL-related opportunities on the Bruno Exchange.

Does the school or Influencer take any revenue from NIL transactions in the Local Exchange?
No.

Who approves a request to register?
Typically, compliance officers are designated by the institution. Questions about approval can be sent to compliance@brown.edu

How will I know when I am approved?
You should receive an email verifying your approval.

When can I start contacting athletes and processing payments?
After being approved by the school, you will be able to contact athletes and process payments.
