Position Title Head Spirit Coach
Job Description
Missouri Western State University invites applications for the position of Head Spirit Coach. The Head Spirit Coach directs, plans, and manages the operation of the Spirit program including academic performance of student-athletes, coaching and training, recruiting, scheduling, budgeting, public relations, fundraising and promotion.

Located in St. Joseph, Missouri, just 45 minutes north of Kansas City, Missouri Western is an NCAA Division II institution, which successfully competes in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) in 16 sports and Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) in 1 sport.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
  • Manage all aspects of the Spirit program and its student-athletes.
  • Monitor the academic performance of student-athletes.
  • Monitor the mental and physical health of student-athletes.
  • Develop training programs for team and individual student-athletes.
  • Coordinate the team travel arrangements and logistics.
  • Manage budget operations for the program and fundraise as necessary.
  • Initiate, coordinate, and participate in fundraising and community engagement activities.
  • Organize camps and alumni events to engage university community.
  • Communicate as necessary with Sports Medicine staff/Sports Performance personnel regarding the health and injury status of student-athletes to help make better decisions regarding their training.
  • Participate in departmental staff meetings and weekly supervisory meetings.
  • Assist in the education of student-athletes on topics related to their health and wellness.
  • Serve as a major marketing tool for the Athletic Department.
  • Recruit, develop and retain student-athletes to participate In both the Cheer and Dance (Mystics) programs.
  • Responsible for planning and coordinating all Spirit Squad/Mascot practices and appearances.
  • Responsible for developing and managing all Spirit Squad cheer and dance clinics and summer camps.
  • Reports to the Director of Athletics or his/her designee.
  • Perform administrative duties as assigned.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to display the effective leadership skills necessary to run an athletic program.
  • Ability to coach student-athletes.
  • Ability to develop relationships with student-athletes and prospective recruits.
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of the sport.
  • Knowledge of the specific skills required for each position.
  • Knowledge of budget management.
  • Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations.
  • Good problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to hire, supervise and manage staff.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and other general office equipment.
  • Organized thinker with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as concentrate on multiple tasks simultaneously.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Must have, or be willing to obtain within the first 30 days or employment, appropriate coaching/safety certification.
  • First Aid/CPR certification
  • Valid Driver’s License
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree

Physical Demands
  • Generally works in an office or an indoor or outdoor sports environment.
  • May be exposed to the loud noise of an audience at games.
  • May be exposed to inclement weather conditions and extreme temperatures.
  • Position requires moderate physical activity, and the ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects.
  • Required to use close vision and be able to focus.
  • Regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to sit, stand, and bend at the knee and waist, and walk.
  • Requires the ability to climb, balance, kneel, stoop, and reach.
  • Must be able to have repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement to type and work on computer.
  • Must have finger dexterity and hand-eye coordination to work on computer, telephone, and related office equipment.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential function.
