JOB SUMMARY:

Plans, organizes, and administers all aspects of the XC/T&F programs with the approval of the Director of Athletics. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.      Organizes and conducts all practice sessions for all teams.

2.     Recruits student-athletes for all teams.

3.     Manages budget for all teams, making requests for major purchases through the Director of Athletics.

4.      Ensures institutional compliance of XC/T&F by adhering to all policies and procedures of the NCAA and Centennial Conference.

5.     Monitors academic progress of athletes through advising and referrals.

6.     Works with Director of Athletic Communications regarding brochures and media relations for the baseball program.

7.     Develops and maintains working relationship with other college departments, including admissions, student affairs, and the dining hall.

8.     Supervises the duties of assistant coaches.

9.     Responsible for developing training rules and monitoring the conduct of athletes when they are representing Washington College, both on and off campus.

10.    Recommends athletes for awards.

11.    Coordinates the scheduling, providing of officials and transportation for intercollegiate contests with the Director of Athletics.

12.    Develops and recommends budget data; authorizes expenditures in accordance with approved budget; approves budgets and expenses of subordinates.  Orders equipment for annual use by the XC/T&F teams, disburses funds for meals on athletic trips and serves as supervisor for all varsity golf functions.

13.    Attends all Centennial Conference XC/F&F meetings.

14.    Works with sports medicine staff to ensure that all athletes are medically cleared to participate.

15.    Works with athletic department office to ensure that all athletes meet NCAA eligibility requirements.    
    
16.     Responsible for the coordination of the security and maintenance of the indoor and outdoor facilities.

17.    Responsible for oversight of all team social media account.

18.    Aids in the fundraising for the tennis program.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs related duties incidental to the work described herein or as may be assigned by the Athletic Director.

 

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES:


1.    Oversees the activities and conduct of team members while they are representing Washington College.

2.    Acts within scope of authority and consistent with college objectives, guidelines, policies, and practices.

3.    For Assistant Coaching staff:
    a.    Develops short and long range operating objectives; reviews existing organizational structure and staffing requirements; recommends and implements changes as needed.  
    b.    Provides appropriate supervision, including communication of clearly defined job responsibilities, adequate training and development, and provision for backup.
    c.    Monitors performance of staff and provides prompt and objective coaching and counseling in managerial and technical matters. Reviews and approves performance appraisals initiated by subordinates of their staff. Evaluates subordinates.
    d.    Assures that effective communications are maintained within areas of responsibility. Where appropriate, informs staff as to plans and progress. Conducts staff discussion sessions at regular and frequent intervals.
e.    Assures that necessary coordination within the area of responsibility is occurring and that coordination of the assigned area with those of other College departments is taking place.

4.    Trains and supervises work study students.

1.  Accountable to: Director of Athletics

    a. Assistant Coaches
    b. Work-study students
    c. Student Athletes.

3.  Advises, consults and coordinates with:
    a. Director of Athletics, SWA and Administrative Assistant. 
    b. Director of Admissions and Admissions counselors             
    c. Director of Sports Medicine         
    d. Director of Sports Performance
    e. Faculty and Deans     
    f.  Athletic Communication Director 
    g  Equipment Manager 
    h. Director of Dining Services 

 

 

WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:

1.  Indoors in temperature-controlled environment

2. Outdoors

3. Occasional van and car driving responsibilities

4. May occasionally require the incumbent to perform tasks that can expose you to blood or blood borne pathogens.  Federal regulations require that the incumbent be offered Hepatitis B vaccine within 10 days of initial assignment and attend a training session prior to performing any exposure-prone tasks.

 

WORK SCHEDULE/HOURS:

1. Exempt status  

2. 35-70 week depending on season

3. Weeknights and weekends as required

Qualifications

EDUCATION:

Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE AND BACKGROUND:

1.  Previous coaching experience on the high school, club, or college level in cross country and/or track and field.

2.  Working knowledge of computers, including word processing and database software.

3.  Facility management experience.
