A Letter From Interim Director of Athletics Dr. Jeri Beggs

Redbird Nation,

With the ever-changing landscape of Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL), we want to keep our season-ticket holders, fans, and community informed on recent events regarding NIL and Illinois State's approach to NIL.

The NCAA has released updated guidance to clarify how existing rules apply to the interim policy for Name, Image, and Likeness. NCAA President Charlie Baker has said that NCAA enforcement staff will pause investigations involving collectives in NIL-related activities. Our athletic department staff and collective, Empower the Nest, will continue to follow Illinois state law in regards to NIL. However, NIL fluctuates by the day and our institution must be prepared for change.

If our athletic programs want to remain competitive, we need support for NIL funds. The days of a school's name being enough to land a recruit are long gone.  I know NIL may be new and different to many of you, but it isn't going away and we need to attack this head on! I know you want to see the Redbirds compete for championships and showcase Illinois State University on a national stage.

Right now, we need your help in raising funds for our collective, Empower the Nest (empowerthenest.com/309).  Empower the Nest is starting a new initiative called the 309 Campaign in hopes of getting 309 donors to donate $309 each to support all 19 Varsity sports at Illinois State and remain competitive in the Missouri Valley Conference and on a national scale. We need your help in this area now more than ever.  Please consider donating today at empowerthenest.com/309.

WHAT TO KNOW:
-    Any NIL involvement must be quid-pro-quo (student-athlete must provide a service in exchange for compensation) and disclosed by student-athlete.
-    Student-athletes may NOT be compensated for pay-for-play.
-    Illinois State University may NOT pay student-athletes directly or indirectly. All payment must come from outside sources.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED:
-    Contribute to Empower the Nest (empowerthenest.com/309).
-    Connect with Brennan White, Illinois State Athletics Director of NIL on partnership opportunities at: bjwhit3@ilstu.edu or call (309) 438-3272

We are determined to adapt to changes in the collegiate landscape and NIL must be a priority for us to be competitive.  We thank you for your loyal support of Illinois State Athletics. With your help, the future is extremely bright for our Redbirds.

Go Redbirds!

Dr. Jeri Beggs
