Interim tag removed: Barry Derickson officially named head football coach

Lobos had a turnaround season in 2022

The interim tag has been removed from Barry Derickson's title.

Derickson has officially become the head football coach at Sul Ross State after doubling the win total from last season.

"First of all, I'm very excited and blessed to be the head guy here. It's a credit to our staff and our players that have worked their tails off in the offseason — without that it wouldn't be possible," said Derickson.

In November of 2021, Derickson was named interim head coach after serving as an offensive coordinator for the Lobos.

This past season Sul Ross finished 4-6 overall and 4-4 in American Southwest Conference play. Statistically, the Lobos had a big turnaround.

On offense, Sul Ross scored 286 points compared 130 during the fall of 2021. The Lobos ended up having the fourth-best offense in the conference.

Six different school records were either shattered or tied on the offensive and defensive sides.

Sul Ross also wrapped up the season with a 3-1 record at home, the first winning record at Jackson Field since 2016.

The 4-4 conference mark was the first time Sul Ross had finished at .500 or better since 2016.

"We're going to continue to ramp up our recruiting efforts," Derickson added. "Hopefully we can land every bit of talent that we need to keep not only competing in this conference but to hopefully double the win total again."
