UIndy Removes Interim Tag as Robinson Officially Takes Over as Director of Track & Field/Cross Country

INDIANAPOLIS—The University of Indianapolis announced Brad Robinson Wednesday as its next Director of Track & Field/Cross Country. The veteran UIndy coach and alum officially takes over after holding down the position as an interim since October.

The Greyhounds' Cross Country Head Coach since 2016 and an assistant coach for the five years prior, Robinson succeeds his mentor Scott Fangman as the Director of Track & Field/Cross Country.

Head shot of Brad Robinson"I'm so grateful to have this chance to take over as director," said a smiling Robinson. "Being an alum, not just of UIndy but also an alum of the cross country and track & field program, I don't take this opportunity lightly. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to carry the torch, continue to raise the bar and take us to the next level as a program."

UIndy Interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Scott Gines applauded Robinson for his leadership abilities and overall success as a coach.

"Brad's progression to Director of Track & Field and Cross Country is clear, storied, and gives me great confidence," noted Gines. "A double-alumnus, former team captain, Coach of the Year, and effective teacher, coach, and recruiter, Brad is ready to lead our programs to new and consistent heights."

Robinson has already enjoyed a successful stint on the Greyhound coaching staff. He led the 2018 women's cross country team to its first GLVC championship in 26 years on the way to earning GLVC Coach of the Year accolades. He later earn the USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year in both 2021 and '22, leading the Greyhounds new heights on the national stage.

Led by the national-champion distance duo of Lauren Bailey and Bernice Cleyet-Merle. UIndy placed seventh at indoor nationals both seasons—highest-ever finish for the UIndy women. The 2022 USTFCCCA DII Women's Track Athlete of the Year, Cleyet-Merle captured indoor individual national titles in the 800 meter (2021) and the mile (2022), while Bailey secured the 2021 DII championship in the 5K after winning the 2020 GLVC cross country crown and earning the program's first-ever All-America nod in cross country.

All told, Robinson has coached UIndy men's and women's cross country student-athletes to 23 All-GLVC selections and five all-region performances.

Robinson added: "I am thankful to [former UIndy Director of Track & Field Scott] Fangman and the entire coaching staff and the support they've given, not only from my time period as an assistant coach but stepping into the interim process.

"Administratively speaking, I want to thank all those that have given me the opportunity to be a coach in the past—from Dr. Wiley to Scott Young, and presently with Greg's [Shaheen] transition, as he's been instrumental in advocating for me to have this opportunity, as well as Scott [Gines], who's been extremely supportive of the transition. So to the entire administration, I'm beyond grateful for their support and advocating on my behalf as well."

As a student-athlete himself, Robinson began his collegiate running career at The Ohio State University, before ultimately transferring to UIndy. The former Greyhound team captain and Kelso Reid Mental Attitude Award recipient graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business Education in December of 2008. He was also an All-GLVC honoree in both cross country and track during his time as a Hound.
