Director of Athletics Joel Quattrone to Say Goodbye to Dickinson After 38 Years

CARLISLE, Pa. – After 38 years of dedicated and faithful service to Dickinson College, Director of Athletics Joel Quattrone has announced that he will retire from his position at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

In his time at Dickinson, Quattrone has served in multiple roles as an instructor and coach for the physical education department as well as working a variety of jobs in the athletic department serving as an assistant athletic director, facilities director, assistant coach (defensive coordinator) for the football team and senior associate director of athletics. Then, in late 2018 after a brief stint as the interim athletic director, Quattrone was appointed the permanent Athletic Director at Dickinson.

Dickinson College President John E. Jones '77, P'11 had this to say about Quattrone's impact on the college: "under Joel's leadership the athletic programs here at Dickinson College have experienced consistent success, with many programs advancing to conference championship action as well as NCAA Tournament play." He went on to add: "our student-athletes continuously boast an impressive cumulative GPA and earn both conference and NCAA accolades which allow them to develop into leaders who serve not only the campus, but the wider world."

Former football head coach and current head men's golf coach Darwin Breaux offered his viewpoints on having worked with Quattrone not only on his staff, but also as an administrator. "Joel has left an indelible mark on Dickinson Athletics over the last 38 years by wearing many hats. I had the distinct pleasure of working with him coaching football as well as reporting to him in his administrative duties. His passion for nurturing, mentoring, guiding and coaching student-athletes has been truly remarkable. Joel has been a tremendous ambassador for Dickinson as a coach, administrator, and a liaison with incoming and current parents as well as alumni."

When looking back at his extensive career with Dickinson, Quattrone reflected on everything he brought to the Red and White in his 38 years. "When I took over as Athletic Director, I wanted to foster a welcome and inviting atmosphere for everyone that was a part of this department whether they had been here for 20-plus years or were a recent hire. Anyone that has worked with me or for this department since I ascended to this role will notice that my door is always open and that is not by accident. It has always been my belief that actions speak louder than words, so when I say I wanted the department to feel welcome I meant it and what better way than to allow anyone to stop in to either ask a question or simply say hello."

As for the legacy that he believes he will leave behind, Quattrone said "I want everyone to feel that I was a guy who attempted to form solid relationships with everyone and anyone that I met. In addition, I want it to be felt that I always worked hard to impact everyone in any way that I could whether that be a player on the field/court/pool/track, a coach or fellow staff member with a question or using my network to assist our students in procuring employment somewhere it has always been my goal to help anyone that needs it."

Those sentiments were echoed by two other coaches as Dickinson graduate and head men's lacrosse coach Dave Webster '88 stated "Coach Q (as he is known) has been the heart of Dickinson Athletics for 38 years. His impact on athletes, teams and coaches has been profound. Coach Q has embodied the "Wear the Red" motto for decades. Very few people could match his work ethic or his passion for Red Devil athletics." Head women's lacrosse coach and Senior Woman Administrator Kim Masimore echoed the remarks from her colleagues "There isn't anyone at Dickinson that cares more about the student-athletes and the members of the Athletic Department than Joel Quattrone. He has poured his entire being into this place, and cares deeply about the student-athlete experience as well as all the people that have the privilege of working for him. He will be missed!"

When asked about what he will fill his time with he said "I will now be able to spend more time with my kids and my entire family. I am not going to be a stranger to Red Devil events as I will still be in attendance just as a fan and nothing more. I am greatly going to miss this job and the people that I have been able to work with over these 38 years! I am very excited for the college's vision for athletics going forward and cannot wait to watch it grow even more!"

" I will always be WEARIN THE RED!" - Joel Quattrone

A nationwide search for a new Director of Athletics will begin in the near future.
