DeGeorge resigns to accept same position at Cal Poly

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Colorado Mesa University head men's basketball coach Mike DeGeorge has announced his resignation and accepted an offer to become the new head coach at NCAA Division I Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, it was announced on Tuesday (Mar. 26) morning.

"We want to thank Mike for all that he did to make the men's basketball program a perennial power in the conference, in the region, and nationally," said CMU Director of Athletics Joan McDermott. "We wish all the best to Mike in his new role at Cal Poly."

DeGeorge's teams compiled a record of 141-43 in his six seasons and led the program to the NCAA Division II Tournament in each of the last five. He led the program to 20 or more wins in five of his six seasons including a program single-season record 29 wins in 2023-24. He led the Mavericks to three Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular season titles and two RMAC tournament titles.

"I am so grateful for the opportunity to have served as head men's basketball coach at Colorado Mesa, it has truly been an honor to work with the players and coaches here," DeGeorge said. "I will have nothing but fond memories from my time here."

He led the tradition-rich men's basketball program to their only NCAA Sweet Sixteen appearances in both 2022 and 2024 while leading the program to their first-ever No. 1 national ranking by the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) during the 2020-21 season.

"Coach DeGeorge was emblematic of the student-athlete model, where character development and learning to be leaders is the primary focus," said CMU President John Marshall. "Cultivating this kind of culture within Division I athletics will benefit the student-athletes he will soon mentor in the next stage of his already exemplary career."

Cal Poly is a member of the Big West Conference and are coming off a season where they went 4-28 overall and 0-20 in the conference.

A national search for DeGeorge's replacement will begin immediately.
