Greg Scruggs, hired earlier this month as Michigan’s defensive line coach, was arrested early Saturday on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, a spokesperson for the Ann Arbor Police Department confirmed.

Chris Page, strategic communications manager for Ann Arbor PD, confirmed the arrest occurred at approximately 3 a.m. but provided no other details. The Detroit News first reported Scruggs’ arrest.

Michigan’s football program and athletic department have suspended Scruggs indefinitely while reviewing the details of the incident, Wolverines head coach Sherrone Moore said in a statement.

“Greg made an unfortunate mistake and was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated. He made no excuses and has taken accountability for his actions,” Moore said.

Scruggs, 33, was hired by Moore after spending last year on Luke Fickell’s staff at Wisconsin. Scruggs also worked for Fickell at Cincinnati from 2018-2021. He was a player at Louisville during Moore’s tenure as a graduate assistant and was a seventh-round pick of the Seattle Seahawks in 2012.

Michigan is set to open spring practice Monday.
