The Director of Marketing and Community Engagement position exists to provide support for the strategic marketing initiatives of the Athletics Department and assigned sport programs. The Department of Athletics uses marketing and community engagement strategies to generate revenue, maximize attendance and to create a first-class game environment. The Director of Marketing and Community Engagement will perform assigned duties and projects in various areas of Marketing, Fan Experience and Community Relations including, but not limited to, the execution of all marketing and fan experience elements related to Football. This position is also responsible for all department community engagements initiatives in an effort to continue to connect Kansas Athletics to the community in the greater Lawrence area.
- Adhere to University, Big 12 Conference, Kansas Athletics and NCAA policies and procedures;
- Maintain knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules and procedures;
- Foster cooperative working relationships with immediate supervisor and staff members who work within or outside his/her work unit;
- Support the athletics departmental goals and philosophies as described by the Director of Athletics, and work to achieve and uphold the department’s mission statement and core values;
- Maintain a positive attitude toward performing job duties and working with other staff members;
- Exhibit professional decorum at all times while representing Kansas Athletics, including routine events and meetings that occur outside of the office and on the road;
- Maintain the confidentiality of all information obtained while an employee of Kansas Athletics including all private, confidential, or sensitive information and ensuring compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulations.
- Develop and implement timely marketing and promotions plans to increase ticket sales, game attendance and fan experience for Kansas Athletics sports programs with a focus on Football;
- Oversee all aspects of football gameday marketing and fan experience, including but not limited to: student activities, Fan Fun Zone, Tailgating, in-game promotions, presentations and giveaways, music execution, band and spirit coordination, public address coordination;
- Develop and implement timely marketing and promotions plans to increase ticket sales, game attendance and fan experience for Kansas softball, with oversight responsibility of a Graduate Assistant;
- Coordination of collateral production (e.g., posters, magnets, calendars, etc.) for designated sports with athletics graphic designers as a part of each programs marketing and promotions plan. Assist with the production execution on all sports collateral;
- Execute creative in-game promotions, presentations and giveaways, and oversee game presentation activities for assigned sports in order to enhance the fan and student-athlete experience by working closely with Rock Chalk Video, Jayhawk Sports Properties, coordinating efforts with the KU Band and Spirit programs;
- Assist with the department strategy and execution of email marketing to increase ticket sales, revenue and fan information activities;
- Oversee the cultivation and engagement of relationships with community and campus partners and help coordinate opportunities for Kansas Athletics community event presence in conjunction with Marketing and Fan Experience, Sales and Service and Kansas Athletics Development. This includes but is not limited to work with USD 497 and other school districts, grassroots marketing efforts, lead generation activities, and inclusion in other community events promoting the Kansas Athletics brand;
- Full oversight of the marketing internship program which includes 15-20 student workers;
- Assist in the oversight of two graduate assistants;
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Associate AD of Marketing and Fan Experience or their designee.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university;
- Minimum of 4 years work experience related to sports marketing, sales promotions, or related field;
- Demonstrated ability to write scripts as part of game production and execution, and the ability to describe ideas, and/or plans clearly and effectively in written format;
- General knowledge of all Big 12 and NCAA guidelines related to marketing, fan experience and game management;
- Ability to communicate clearly and to convey thoughts, ideas and plans clearly to coaches, administrators and other athletics staff members;
- Outstanding organizational skills and attention to detail;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively under multiple, strict deadlines in a fast-paced office environment with the capacity to adapt quickly to major and minor changes in projects and outcomes;
- Proven strong work ethic and ability to work in a team environment;
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.);
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills and solutions focused approach to challenges and improvements;
- Ability and willingness to work home sporting events, and occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed during peak sport seasons.
- Experience working in collegiate or professional sports game production settings;
- Working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Suite;
- Master’s degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent relevant experience.
