Western Michigan University's Football Field at Waldo Stadium to be Named Stafford-Smith Field Following Historic $5 Million Gift from David and Ronda Stafford

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan University (WMU) Football is proud to announce that the football field at Waldo Stadium will be named Stafford-Smith Field in recognition of a historic $5 million gift from David & Ronda Stafford and family. This gift represents the largest naming contribution in the history of WMU Athletics.

"I can't think of a better story than to see a MAC Champion football student-athlete graduate from WMU, grow a business right here in Kalamazoo, and then give back to the football program in this way," said Dan Bartholomae, Vice President and Director of Athletics at WMU. "Today, we are all inspired by the generosity and commitment of Dave and Ronda Stafford. We look forward to watching championship teams compete on Stafford-Smith Field at Waldo Stadium."

David Stafford, a 1988 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Football Championship team member, played for the Broncos from 1986-1988. He graduated from WMU with a Bachelor of Arts degree in organizational communications and medieval history. He is currently the president, chief executive officer and owner of Stafford-Smith Inc., a family-owned food service vendor company based in Kalamazoo and established by his grandfather in 1940. Under David's leadership, the third-generation business has flourished, with 17 locations in the United States and 3 satellite locations doing business nationally and internationally.

"We are deeply grateful for the transformative generosity of Dave and Ronda Stafford. Their visionary philanthropy is a living example of their faith and confidence in our football program, Bronco Athletics, and Western," said President Dr. Ed Montgomery. "Their support will allow Coach Taylor, and our student-athletes to rise to new heights and compete for championships."

The $5 million gift will directly support future football projects, ensuring continued success and excellence within the program.

"On behalf of our entire Bronco Football program, I want to extend our deepest gratitude to David and Ronda Stafford and their family for their generous gift," said Head Football Coach Lance Taylor.  "The naming of Stafford-Smith Field is a testament to their belief in the future of this program. It's inspiring to see a Bronco football alum supporting the next generation of student-athletes, and this contribution will have a lasting influence on the future of Bronco football."

A special recognition for the David and Ronda Stafford family, his staff, and teammates will occur during WMU's annual Homecoming game on Saturday, October 26th, when the Broncos host Kent State at 3:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to attend and celebrate this historic moment for WMU Football. Tickets for the game are on sale now.

A statement from David Stafford and Family
When I received the call from WMU about the possible naming opportunity for Stafford Smith to name the field, I was completely shocked. This opportunity is an incredible honor for our family. My time as a Bronco was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. To have this incredible honor bestowed upon Stafford-Smith and my family is profoundly humbling. I couldn't be prouder of my family and company to be part of such a meaningful recognition.

As both a player and student at WMU, I gained invaluable lessons that shaped who I am today in my professional life. Those experiences not only prepared me for my time in the Marines right after college but also instilled in me a deep understanding of teamwork, discipline, and hard work—qualities essential for achieving success. Even now, I often reflect on the lessons I learned as a Bronco and how they've continued to guide me throughout my journey. I'll always look back on the lessons I learned as a Bronco fondly.

Being a Bronco football player was an unmatched experience. I am incredibly proud to be part of the rich tradition that is Bronco Football. From game days and practices to workouts and forging lifelong bonds with my teammates, those moments defined my time at WMU. Even today, after years apart, when we reconnect, it feels like no time has passed. It was never about individual achievements or who scored the most—it was about the camaraderie, the family we built, and the unbreakable bonds of friendship that still remain.

It has been a great ride to watch the progression of Bronco Football over the years. I'm impressed with their current leadership from the top down. You cannot ask for a better and more passionate group of people at the helm to bring Bronco football to the next level.

For decades, as a family and a company, we have prioritized giving back to WMU and Bronco Football. As a player, I was part of the effort to develop a new weight room in 1987. Through our company, we've contributed to multiple projects in WMU athletics facilities, including most recently, the refueling stations to support student-athlete nutrition, along with various other initiatives across campus. Having our family name on the field at Waldo Stadium further solidifies our deep connection and love for the Broncos.

Being able to say that I am a Bronco and played on the field, which will now have our family name, is something I will treasure for life. My family and the entire Stafford Smith team are incredibly humbled to have this honor and we hope this leaves a lasting legacy for future Broncos and generations to come.
