Matthew Schaeffer Named CWRU Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving Assistant Coach

Case Western Reserve University Head Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Coach Doug Milliken announced the hiring of Matthew Schaeffer to be the program's Assistant Coach. Schaeffer started at CWRU on August 27.

"I am incredibly excited to have Matthew join our program. After an exhaustive search with many worthy candidates, Matthew separated himself from the field," Milliken said. "He comes to us with great experience and brings some strengths that I know will complement our program in new and fresh ways. Matthew has already hit the ground running, and we are ready for the season to get rolling."

Schaeffer spent the prior two seasons as an assistant coach at Connecticut College. With the Camels, he assisted with recruiting, on-deck coaching, and daily operations of the program. Schaeffer guided four All-Americans, including the 2024 CSCAA Division III Swimmer of the Year, and 10 CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.

"I am thrilled to be part of such a great institution and to have the opportunity to coach these incredible student-athletes," Schaeffer said. "I want to thank Doug and the university for giving me this opportunity, and I am excited about the bright future of the Spartan swim and dive program."

An Ohio native, Schaeffer earned a Bachelor of Arts in data science at Wittenberg University in 2022. A skilled statistician, he has knowledge and experience with statistical modeling, data visualization, and multiple programming languages. At Connecticut College, he created and maintained a practice log database that tracked 17 different variables for each swimmer at each practice, using the data to improve student-athlete performance throughout the season.

The Spartan swimming and diving teams will begin the 2024-25 season at the Oberlin College Early Season Invite on October 11 and 13.
