Syracuse, N.Y.― After serving as Syracuse’s men’s basketball coach for the past 47 years, Jim Boeheim has a new job and a new job title.

Boeheim, who announced his retirement as SU’s basketball coach last week, is now working at Syracuse University as Special Assistant to the Athletic Director, according to a new posting on SU’s website.

In the SU athletics department staff directory, Boeheim is listed under athletic director John Wildhack, Wildhack’s executive assistant Mary Kelly and senior deputy athletic director Herman Frazier.

Boeheim had alluded to his new role within the university last Friday during the press conference to introduce former SU player and associate head coach Adrian Autry as Boeheim’s head coaching successor. Boeheim had mentioned working in an office, pointing in a direction away from the basketball offices inside the Carmelo K. Anthony Basketball Center and toward the athletic department offices in the adjacent John A. Lally Athletics Complex.

However, neither Boeheim nor Wildhack offered any specifics as to Boeheim’s role or his job title during Friday’s proceedings. It is expected that part of Boeheim’s job will include a fund-raising aspect.

Boeheim is uniquely suited to a post-coaching career in SU’s athletic department. He played basketball at Syracuse from 1963 to 1966. He served as an assistant coach from 1969 to 1976 when Syracuse coach Roy Danforth left and Boeheim was hired.

In 47 years, Boeheim’s teams won over 1,100 games, went to five Final Fours and won the 2003 NCAA championship.

On Wednesday, Syracuse University announced that Gerry McNamara had been promoted to associate head coach by Autry. In addition, it was announced that SU assistant Allen Griffin would also remain on Autry’s coaching staff.

Syracuse.com will debut a documentary film on Syracuse basketball’s 2003 NCAA championship team on March 29 at the Landmark Theatre. Tickets are on sale now. For more information, click here.
