Cal Poly Athletics Unveils Swanson Nutrition Athletic Center

10/3/2024 11:21:00 AM

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — Cal Poly Athletics unveiled its brand new Swanson Nutrition Athletic Center, a donor-funded facility designed to meet all the nutrition needs of all Cal Poly student-athletes.

The facility, graciously funded by Bill and Cheryl Swanson, will provide healthy, on the go snacks & sandwiches, post workout customized recovery smoothies and electrolyte based beverages to ensure that Mustang athletes are being properly fueled to maximize their athletic output.

“We believe Cal Poly provides one in the best educations in the country as an alum and someone who hired hundreds of Cal Poly graduates,” Bill Swanson said. “We are providing the best infrastructure for our sports and now with nutrition we can help provide the ability for a healthy way to compete at the highest levels.”

Mr. and Mrs. Swanson were motivated to make SNAC a reality after hearing from student-athletes that they needed a place on campus where they could quickly get healthy food and smoothies specifically geared towards recovery and performance. They were even more convinced after hearing from Dr. Scott Reaves, a former Cal Poly student-athlete, professor in the Food Science and Nutrition Department, and Director of Sports Nutrition about how this could help Cal Poly athletes.

“Cal Poly Athletics could not be more excited nor more grateful for the opening of this facility,” Senior Associate Athletics Director Jackson Stava said. “The Sports Nutrition program has already made an impact on our fantastic student-athletes and the vision of Mr. and Mrs. Swanson to enhance that program with this facility will allow for a more substantial impact for years and years to come. To be able to support student-athlete wellness is imperative and we could not be more excited for the opening of SNAC.”

It will be home to Dr. Scott Reaves who for more than a decade, he and his staff have worked with teams and athletes to come up with specifically catered diet plans based on highly detailed research and analysis.

“This is a nutrition game changer for Cal Poly athletes,” said Cal Poly beach volleyball head coach Todd Rogers. “Bill and Cheryl have once again stepped up and been a catalyst for change in the lives of Mustang athletes. I know our beach volleyball athletes are forever thankful to the Swanson’s and are looking forward to using SNAC to help them be better on the sand.”

The facility is located near the heart of athletics, Mott Athletics Center, next to the Comerford Pavilion to allow student-athletes the convenience of being able to grab a healthy, delicious snack in between practice, weights, and class close to where they spend the majority of their time.

“We are so lucky to be the first student-athletes to benefit from SNAC,” said Mustang beach volleyball student-athlete Lindsey Sparks. “On behalf of all Mustang student-athletes, thank you Bill and Cheryl Swanson for their kindness and making our experience as Cal Poly student-athletes better with this facility.”
