Garden City, N.Y. - Effective Monday, September 16,
Katie Apostolopoulos has been tabbed to take the reigns for the Panthers, announced Danny McCabe, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation.
She becomes just the tenth head coach for Adelphi, which has a storied past rooted in traditions and the culture of winning.
"I am honored to become a part of the Adelphi family and truly thankful to Danny [McCabe] and the entire search committee," commented Apostolopoulos. "I am looking forward to working with this talented group of student-athletes as well as continue to build success both on and off the field."
Most recently the Head Coach at New York Institute of Technology before it disbanded the athletics program in 2020, Apostolopoulos spent two years at Cedar Crest College from 2016-2018. In the 2017 campaign, her program broke the school record for wins in a single season and made back to back appearances in the conference tournament.
"We are excited to welcome Katie to the Adelphi family," said McCabe.
"We were looking for someone who could develop student-athletes on and off the field and wanted to bring in someone who had a history of success. She brings experience as a decorated player in DII and head coaching experience at both the DII and DIII levels and we look forward to working with Katie as she leads the Adelphi Softball program into this next era."
Before her stint at Cedar Crest, she also recorded stops at Iona College and her alma mater, Kutztown University. She was born on Long Island, but moved with her family from Floral Park to Lancaster, Pa., at age 2.
A standout in her four-year playing career as a catcher at Kutztown, she helped lead the Golden Bears to the Division II national championship game as a senior. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Rookie of the year, she concluded her career as a three-time All-Conference selection and All-Region honoree. In 209 games (207 starts) during her four-year collegiate career, Apostolopoulos hit .310 with 22 homers and 117 RBIs in 642 at-bats. Kutztown posted a 173-63 record (.733) during that span.
Understanding the importance of giving back to where you came from, Apostolopoulos is "looking forward to building relationships with the strong alumni network" on her new journey.
The team is scheduled to host an alumni event, which will now feature a meet and greet component with "Coach A" on Saturday, September 28.
