WILKES-BARRE, PA (March 14, 2023) -- On Tuesday afternoon, the King's College athletic department announced its latest coaching change as Head Men's Soccer Coach John Velasco has been appointed first assistant at Division I Temple University's men's soccer program. Velasco will begin his duties with the Owls immediately as King's begins its national search for the next head coach.

"I would like to thank our Associate Vice President and Executive Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation, Cheryl Ish for giving me the opportunity to experience the great community that King's College has to offer as well as entrusting me to lead this program," said Velasco. "I would also like to thank my colleagues and the players for the last couple of years. It has been such a valuable experience filled with unconditional support and growth. I look forward to the bright future that this program has ahead of it."

Velasco saw much success with the Monarchs men's soccer team in his two-year stint as he brought a wealth of knowledge and experience from his various roles in his career. His first season featured an appearance in the MAC Freedom semifinals and a 9-6-1 overall record, including 6-2 against conference foes.

It was these efforts and early successes that saw Velasco earn MAC Freedom Coach of the Year in 2021 with four All-MAC Freedom selections and a United Soccer Coaches All-Region IV Team honoree in Kyle Shalvey.

"I would like to thank John for his time with us at King's," added Ish. "From John's first day he's been an active and respected member of our department. John always acted in the best interest of our student-athletes, and I wish him the best of luck as he advances in his career."

King's will begin its national search for the next head coach of the Monarchs men's soccer program this spring in preparation for the 2023 campaign.
