Assistant Athletic Director for Communications

This is a 12-month full time position residing in the Athletic Department within the Division of Student Affairs. This position of Assistant Athletic Director for Communications reports to the Executive Director of Athletics.

The Assistant Athletic Director is a member of the management team and a team leader that provides direct supervision for full time, part time and student employees. 

The Assistant AD for Communications is responsible for all communications initiatives for the Athletic Department and it's 20 intercollegiate athletic teams. This individual has a wide range of responsibilities which include: team management, customer service, writing, editing, graphic design, social media, webpage management, archiving, marketing, promotions, proactive media pitching and the facilitation of interviews and questions.

The Assistant AD will also be directly responsible for advising and executing the department s awards and honors in collaboration with the larger team as well as supporting other department wide announcements and crisis/issues management.

The Assistant AD for Communications is the lead game management supervisor responsible for the coordination of game day staffing (internal and external), promotional events & activities, community outreach, special events and special announcements across the department's 20 sponsored sports.

The Assistant AD will serve as a forward-thinking expert in the field that actively keeps abreast of trends and tools and helps educate the athletic staff to identify and seize opportunities that arise. 

Required Qualifications:   

  • Must be able to work independently.

  • Writing, editing, web, written, social media, and video content generation, proofreading.

  • Understanding rules of all 20 intercollegiate sports and practicing judgement.

  • Maintaining knowledge and keep up to date of technology trends and software necessary to execute responsibilities.

  • Build and maintain relationships with internal and external constituents.

  • Bringing materials and equipment up and down steps to press boxes and across campus to various athletic facilities.

  • Most weeks in season require six days per week and sometimes seven days per week.

  • Long hours that sometimes stretch over 14 hours in a day, sitting for long periods of time.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Photography, photo editing and video skills preferred.

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's degree preferred.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

  • Sports Information/Athletic Communications knowledge and experience.

  • Strong knowledge of athletic operations and game management.

  • Final offer of employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background check and reference checks.

  • Residency Requirement: In accordance with the New Jersey First Act P.L. 2011 c.70, effective September 1, 2011, new public employees in certain positions (faculty exempt) are required to obtain New Jersey residency within one (1) year of employment.
