ST. PAUL, Minn. – The court in Alumni Gymnasium at Macalester College will be named after longtime coach, professor and mentor Doug Bolstorff, Director of Athletics
Donnie Brooks announced. The announcement was made at halftime of the men's basketball game on Feb. 11.
Over 35 men's basketball alumni returned to Macalester and were recognized on the court at halftime of the game on Feb. 11 as the announcement was made. The alumni ranged from the 1960s to last year's graduates. A reception was held in the Atrium of the Leonard Center following the announcement.
Bolstorff was a coach and professor for over 40 years at Macalester from 1957 to 2000. He coached the men's basketball team for 30 years, winning a program-best 264 games and receiving Minnesota's small college Coach of the Year award three times. As the track and cross country coach, Bolstorff led his teams to 11 MIAC championships on the track and eight conference titles in cross country, coaching multiple individual champions in both sports. He retired as the golf coach in 2000 and was inducted into the Macalester Hall of Fame in 2003. Bolstorff passed away in December of 2021 at the age of 90.
"This naming opportunity is special because the endowment not only will honor a lifelong educator and coach of multiple sports in Coach Bolstorff, it will be used to maintain and keep our court, and the implements within, which are heavily used by the Macalester community," Brooks said. "This fundraising project is nearing its end and we are proud to be 80% of the way to our final goal of $500,000. We hope that you would consider making a gift to honor Coach Bolstorff and/or Macalester Athletics."
