Grand Valley State Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Welfare and Development (SAW-D), Walter Moore, announced his retirement that will be effective August 1, 2024. Moore has served Grand Valley State University in a variety of roles and has been a staple in Grand Valley State athletics since 1995. Grand Valley State athletics will host a reception for Moore on Wednesday, July 31 from 4:00 - 5:00 PM in the Fieldhouse Upper Arena Lobby. Remarks will take place at 4:15.
"I am grateful for Walter's commitment and service to our student-athletes over the last two decades," said GVSU Director of Athletics, Keri Becker. "He impacted the lives of thousands of student-athletes in deeply meaningful ways beyond the fields of play. When I became the Director of Athletics, I knew he possessed the perfect skill set for a new position we would call Associate AD for Student-Athlete Development and Welfare. He has a heart for developing good human beings and the gift of connection we are grateful he shared with GVSU for so long," added Becker.
Moore began his career at Grand Valley State as part of the Michigan College/University partnership (MICUP) as the program coordinator in 1995. He moved to GVSU athletics in 1998 as the Assistant Director of Athletics/Academic Advising Program Coordinator, the first-ever at Grand Valley State to serve in that role.
Moore became the Coordinator of Academic Affairs for Athletics at the University of Virginia in 2003, a position he held until 2006 when he came back to Grand Valley State as the Director of the GVSU Excel Program. Moore became the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance in 2007 and held that post until he took over in his current position of Student-Athlete Welfare and Development in 2017.
"Grand Valley State University has given me and my family so much over the past 25+ years," said Moore. "It has afforded me a top level education (I earned my MED from GVSU in 2004) and a wonderful career. I was able to grow as a professional and to contribute to the university in a multitude of ways. GVSU also provided for my family. My children grew to value education and utilized GVSU's quality coursework. Most importantly, GVSU has provided me the opportunity to build lasting relationships and positively impact the lives of many of our phenomenal students. I have received as much as I have given as I worked with them to navigate their academic and life journeys. As I move onto the next phase of life, I will never forget my time at GVSU, the people I met and what it has meant to me and family. Thank you to everyone who has provided me support, mentorship, and collegiality. And finally a BIG THANK YOU to the students, who have helped me grow immeasurably."
Moore also served as the sport supervisor for men's and women's indoor/outdoor track & field and cross country, and men's and women's golf, while also serving as the tournament director for NCAA National Championships, Regional and GLIAC Championships during his tenure at GVSU. He organized programs designed to prepare student-athletes for success in the classroom and when they graduated from GVSU. He touched and mentored virtually every student-athlete during his 25 years as a part of Grand Valley State athletics and played a role in the graduation and career placement of thousands. In addition, Moore was the liaison for the GVSU Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) and developed the SAW-D program.
