MIAMI SHORES, Fla.— Brett Young resigned as the head coach of the Barry baseball program, director of athletics and recreation Dr. Scott Smith announced today.
Young, who has been with the program since 2021 and served as head coach in 2024, resigned to take the assistant coach for hitting at Charleston Southern.
"I want to thank Brett for his leadership this past year as head coach and the previous two years as assistant," Smith said. "While we are sad to see him leave, we understand that this is a wonderful professional and personal opportunity for him and his family. I expect nothing but continued success for Brett in the future."
Young, as the recruiting coordinator, brought in the bulk of the class that helped carry the Bucs to a 35-19 mark and the NCAA Division II Super Regional in 2023. As the head coach in 2024, he guided the team to a 28-22 mark, 16-14 in the always tough Sunshine State Conference for the second straight year. The Bucs faced one of the toughest schedules in all of Division II in 2024, facing off against World Series teams Tampa and Catawba, as well as regional qualifiers Saint Leo, Embry-Riddle, North Greenville, Mount Olive, and Wingate.
"I would like to thank Dr. Scott Smith and Dr. Mike Allen for believing in me in my time as head coach at Barry University," Young said. "I appreciate their guidance and faith in the coaching staff and players. This new opportunity is both a professional and family decision. With having immediate family in the Charleston area, this opportunity was something that I could not turn down as a husband and father. Professionally, it will allow me to grow and learn from a very successful head coach and fellow assistant coaches. I want to thank previous Barry University head coach Juan Ranero for his mentorship in my time at Barry, without him, I would not be in this position. Lastly, I want to thank all of the Buccaneer players. I thank you for your commitment and effort both on and off the field to our program and to the University. I know you will all continue to have success at Barry."
Current assistant coach and junior varsity head coach DJ Price will serve as interim head coach, Smith also announced. Price, who has led the JV program to a winning record each of his three seasons, has a 41-19-1 record with the program.
"Going forward, I'm grateful to Coach Price, our current associate head baseball coach and JV head coach who will serve as our acting head coach for the interim," Smith said. "He's been instrumental in our recent success and I'm confident he can help us sustain this momentum for our baseball program."
Price took over as the recruiting coordinator after Young was elevated to the head coach position and helped develop a number of players who advanced up from the JV program to make an impact with the varsity, including Freddy Rodriguez who earned Second-Team All-SSC in the spring.
