PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Pilots Men's Soccer Head Coach Nick Carlin-Voigt has signed a contract extension through 2029, University of Portland Vice President of Athletics Scott Leykam announced on Monday.
"We are grateful for all Nick has done for UP men's soccer and the University, and are grateful to have him make a long-term commitment to stay on The Bluff," Leykam said. "Nick has done an incredible job both on and off the field, developing one of the best programs in college soccer while helping get student-athletes to the next level. We are excited to see where he continues to take Portland Soccer."
"My family and I are honored to sign this extension as it's a privilege to represent this program. Pilot Soccer is a central part of our life and I'm so proud of what we have accomplished. I'm excited to continue our work to give our players the best college experience in the country," Carlin-Voigt said. "Every day I get to work with great young men who are motivated to unlock their full potential. I would like to thank all our former and current players who have contributed to the success of program. We are all here to carry on the legacy of Clive Charles. Our players understand this incredibly rich past while continuing to build the program's future. Merlo Magic has truly been alive, and we want to continue to build a program that connects with the community in Soccer City, USA. We will be relentless in our pursuit of excellence to continue to bring joy to our supporters, playing in a way that is both exciting and entertaining."
Carlin-Voigt signed on with the Pilots back in 2016, leading them to a WCC Regular Season Title in his first season as well as their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. Since then, he has led the Pilots to five NCAA Tournament appearances and has led them past the first round of the tournament four times, including making the quarterfinals of the tournament in 2022. It was the first time the Pilots had made the Elite Eight since 1995. That same tournament, they hosted a Sweet 16 matchup for the first time ever, defeating Western Michigan 1-0. The Pilots are one of 11 teams in the country to have made it past the first round of the tourney each of the last three years. The Pilots also earned a first-round bye for the 2023 NCAA Tournament, marking the first time they'd accomplished such a feat since 1988.
Portland has been one of the most exciting programs in the country, leading the nation in combined goals per game over the last two years (2.52). They set a program record with a home unbeaten streak that extended to 28 games (26-0-2) dating back to the 2021 season. This past year they led the conference in 11 different statistical categories and nationally ranked first in points per game (8.47), second in goals per game (2.65) and assists per game (3.18), fourth in assists (54), fifth in total points (144) and sixth in total goals (45) and goal differential (30). Portland is 10th in the country in NCAA Director Cup points from NCAA Participation the last three years as well.
"I would like to thank VP for Athletics Scott Leykam, our sports admin Karina Handeland and President Dr Robert D. Kelly for their continued support, as well as the entire athletic department and campus community," Carlin-Voigt said. "Portland has become our home as our three children were born here and my wife Dr. Marin Henderson-Posther has taught at the University of Portland. Lastly, I've always wanted to build a program around family with the goal of making my beloved late mother Patricia Carlin proud. The values and teachings she has instilled in me will continue to be alive in our program's mission of service, community and leadership."
The Pilots had three players taken in the 2024 MLS SuperDraft, the most in program history, with Kevin Bonilla, Jacob Babalai and Buba Fofanah all being selected. Since 2016, nine different Pilot players have gone on to earn the chance to play in MLS either through the SuperDraft or homegrown signings. Bonilla, who signed with Real Salt Lake after being a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, was the first Pilot taken in the first round since 2010. The Pilots have had 11 players go on to play abroad as well since 2017.
