Tech firm Teamworks makes another round of acquisitions

Teamworks, the rapidly growing Durham, N.C.-based sports tech firm, has finalized another series of acquisitions that will enhance the company’s product line and move it closer to becoming an all-encompassing source for athletic and academic performance. The acquisition of four companies -- Smartabase, Retain, Grafted and NextPlay -- will take Teamworks to more than 300 employees living and working across 10 countries, and build on what it calls the operating system for sports. Those four newly acquired businesses provide Teamworks with expertise in athletic and academic performance to go along with the company’s previous capabilities in team scheduling, communications, nutrition and other areas of importance for college and pro athletes.

SMART CHOICE: Smartabase, founded in Brisbane, Australia in 2003, is easily the largest company Teamworks has acquired in its history. Smartabase, which also has offices in London and Colorado, was formerly known as Fusion Sport until it rebranded last year. The company, powered by 120 employees ranging from sports scientists to health technology experts, has established itself as one of the innovators and pioneers in tracking human performance, both in sport and in military realms. Teamworks founder & CEO Zach Maurides said that the tracking data and analysis from Smartabase will be integrated into the Teamworks hub, where previously acquired companies like Notemeal, a nutrition-tracking software, provides a more holistic viewpoint of the athlete.

ANOTHER LAYER: Retain enters the Teamworks ecosystem as an academic performance utensil that adds another layer of data about the college athletes. This adds to the original purpose of the Teamworks technology, which was built on logistics, communications and team scheduling. Retain technology provides an array of academic information, such as early grade reports that track academic progress, academic calendars and monthly student check-ins via surveys. Teamworks also uses Pulse surveys to provide anonymous surveys for athlete feedback. In addition to Smartabase and Retain, Teamworks also has acquired Grafted and NextPlay, two companies that work in the realm of college athletic alumni. Those two companies will be consolidated and rebranded into Teamworks Communities.

THE NEXT STEP: The enhanced Teamworks operating system now includes the Teamworks Hub, INFLCR NIL platform, Notemeal, Whistle, Smartabase, Retain, Teamworks Communities, and another new unit called Compliance that’s being developed and will further digitize the athlete’s day-to-day activities and performance. These acquisitions come on the heels of a Series D round of financing last June for $50M that positioned the company to make another round of acquisitions. Maurides said that Teamworks vision is to deliver a consolidated experience for athletes and teams. Maurides told SBJ: “These moves represent a massive step toward executing our vision. These are vital elements to help our customers support every phase of their athletic lifecycle.” Teamworks works with more than 5,000 Division I teams across 300-plus college athletic departments.
